  • Facilities-rich Catalonia site a five-minute drive from Begur
  • Platja Fonda beach five minutes’ drive; Figueres and Girona 55 minutes
  • Dogs welcome; two swimming pools; kids’ club; fitness area; bike hire
The beaches of the rugged Costa Brava and the historic towns of north-eastern Spain are yours to explore from the comfort of Càmping Begur, an extraordinarily well-equipped site a couple of kilometres outside the town of Begur (five minutes’ drive). The environmentally friendly site sits in the middle of a pine grove that provides plenty of shade – excellent news, especially during the scorching Catalonian summers. Speaking of which: whenever you fancy a dip in the Mediterranean Sea, the nearest beach (pebbly Platja Fonda) is a five-minute drive away. Bring your snorkel – these really are crystal-clear waters. Those who prefer sand have only a little further to go (still under 10 minutes, though) to sheltered Cala Malaret. Of course, there’s no need to reach for the car keys at all – being an ‘an extraordinarily well-equipped site’, Camping Begur has not one pool, but two: one for swimming laps, the other for toddlers to splash around in. Other facilities include a play area and a games room, plus a kids’ club to keep young guests busy; a fitness centre, a pétanque court and a dog park. Then there’s the spectacular landscape, laced with hiking and cycling trails leading to small coves or impressive clifftops. (Cycle hire is available on site.) Come mealtimes, besides the poolside restaurant, there are a couple of dozen barbecue stations scattered around the grounds – no queueing to grill your burgers here. Add a well-stocked supermarket and an off-licence selling regional wines, and you have all the ingredients for a great holiday.

Local attractions

Begur spreads around a wooded hill topped by the ruins of a medieval castle. From the castle, it’s a 20-minute walk to the Mirador del Passeig Carmen Amaya, with panoramic views of the coastline. Other sights in town include defensive towers, like the Torre de Sant Ramon, and handsome colonial-style dwellings. Figueres (55 minutes’ drive) was the hometown of Salvador Dalí. In addition to the Surrealist artist’s birthplace (an elegant mansion), there is the Dalí Theatre and Museum, a suitably quirky bright-pink structure topped by eggs and golden statues. Inside are works by Dalí himself and other artists. Parc de la Devesa in Girona (55 minutes) is a vast green area on the river Riu Ter, with tree-lined paths and sports grounds. The Museu d'Història dels Jueus explores the history of the Jewish community in the area, or take a guided tour of the historic Arab Baths, with their imposing stone walls and slender columns.
