  • Dog-friendly site in the mountainous Sierra de Guara Natural Park
  • Huesca 45 minutes’ drive; Lleida one hour
  • Play area and riverside beach; restaurant; organised excursions
Heading to the Sierra y los Cañones de Guara Natural Park for some climbing, sliding and diving into rivers and ravines (or simply for some epic hiking or mountain biking)? Then book a spot at Camping Río Vero. This family-run spot sits just south of the town of Alquézar (five minutes’ drive), on the banks of the river after which it is named. Site managers Alberto and Dorothée have intimate knowledge of the surrounding area, and they’ll be able to recommend the best trails and climbing routes, but they should also be your first port of call for somewhat less active pursuits, such as winery visits (complete with tastings, of course) and assorted cultural activities. If you don’t want to put too much physical effort into exploring this spectacular area, it is possible to rent electric bikes in Colungo (five minutes) or Adahuesca (10 minutes). And if you’re a newbie to adventure sports, a team of experts is on hand to guide you and your family through your first climbing or canyoning routes. Speaking of family, children (and furry companions) are welcome here, and in addition to a playground (and dog walks…), there is a riverside beach with plenty of trees for shade and clear shallow waters for paddling. The restaurant serves paella, traditional dishes and home-made desserts, as well as craft beers and wines from the Somontano region, or you can make your own meals at the communal barbecue. Need provisions? The on-site supermarket is well stocked with local produce, meats and fresh bread.

Local attractions

Alquézar’s pretty town centre has cobbled alleyways lined with stone houses. The Colegiata started its life as an Arab fortress, but it was turned into a Catholic church in the 11th century; some frescoes from this period decorate the walls of the cloister. Near the church, the Pasarelas del Vero is a walkway hugging the sides of the canyon. Vintage-style shops line colonnaded Plaza Luis López Allué in Huesca (45 minutes’ drive), while the Abbey of San Pedro el Viejo houses the tombs of two kings from the royal house of Aragon. Parque Miguel Servet has a duck pond and a contemporary circular fountain. Lleida (one hour) spreads around its hilltop citadel, the Castell de la Suda, a fortified complex that also includes a cathedral with an ornate bell tower. Across the Rio Segre, the Parc dels Camps Elisis is a green space planted with linden and magnolia trees.
