Set among a nature haven: spot kestrels, owls, moles and rabbits

Seeking serenity as well as scenery? A short drive from the hilltop town of Medina Sidonia, Camping Medina Sidonia has spectacular views out towards the coastal city of Cádiz… and a nicely laidback vibe well away from the crowds of thronging seaside towns. Pitch up here and you might well think you've stepped into Farthing Wood: protected from the winds of the east, the local area has its own microclimate, which provides all the right conditions for a lushly shaded wildlife haven for you to wander around. And there's a fair bit to see too: among pine, eucalyptus, poplar, almond and other trees, this is a natural habitat for heaps of local birds such as goldfinch, sparrows, nightingales, partridge, blackbirds, kestrels, hawks, vultures and owls, as well as a whole bunch of mammal wildlife including hedgehogs, Egyptian mongoose, moles and rabbits. In among all that, cool off with a dip in the outdoor pool, then secure yourself a big drink at the beach bar – you'll definitely need at least one to keep you company while you're draped over one of the poolside loungers all afternoon... The on-site medical hut is on hand for any minor incidents; for anything else supplies- or medicine-wise, the local town is 10 minutes' drive away.

Liked: The location, friendly helpful staff. Good facilities, the toilet and shower block were very clean.
I was concerned regarding the reviews of access to the site whether we would be able to get up and down the steep hill, we were in a motorhome with a motorbike on the back on a rack and had no problems getting up or down the hill.
Great place to stay if you are going to Jerez Circuit, took us 25 mins to get there.
We enjoyed the hens on site and thought the cockerel wake up call was lovely.
The site is very relaxed and we really liked the fact that there weren’t notices all over the place telling you what you couldn’t do.
There are children on site at the weekends who are utilising the play area and can be a little noisy if you are near, we found this was just early evening and did not bother us.

Liked: The owner is friendly and accomodating ... Nice shaded location in the Spanish heat

Disliked: The campsite because of its location on a steep track on the mountain is not suitable for large motorhomes and caravans that are not towed by a powerful 4 X 4

Local attractions

From here you can easily go on long rambles and mountain bike rides around the spectacular Spanish countryside surrounding the site: the local town of Medina Sidonia is a pretty spot to wander around, full of Roman galleries, a Gothic church, a convent, Mudéjar architecture and several medieval monuments. While you're there, it's well worth sampling something of the region's sweets, such as an alfajor cookie or some other sugary treat, usually made primarily with almonds and honey. For seaside days, the site is about 40 minutes' drive from the Bay of Cádiz and the seaside spots of Rota, La Ballena beach, Elba Costa Ballena beach and Thalasso Resort. Other coastal sites and activities within easy reach from Cádiz include the sherry-producing town of El Puerto de Santa María and Chipiona seaside resort, home to a 13th-century castle-museum, a huge lighthouse and a well-established sailing school.
