  • Quiet family-friendly site in the Mpumalanga village of Wakkerstroom
  • Wakkerstroom wetlands 20 minutes’ walk; Zaaihoek Dam 20 minutes’ drive
  • Braai and restaurant; deli and art gallery; mini-golf and trampoline
Fancy stunning mountain views? They are certainly served up at DeKotzenhof Camp, a site located in the village of Wakkerstroom in Mpumalanga. This is an easy spot to find by the side of a tar road and it has ample safe parking; it’s also only five minutes’ walk to shops and restaurants, so once parked up, there’s no need to get back in your car until it's time to leave. The site is on the property of DeKotzenhof Guesthouse and you have access to the deli (check out the art display on the walls), which sells local artisan produce, and the sustainably managed zero-miles restaurant run by chef-owner Mark – it’s open for breakfast, lunch and supper but you’ll need to book in advance. Alternatively, there’s a braai for cooking up alfresco feasts (buy your fresh meat at the deli). Kids can run off energy on the mini-golf course or have a bounce around on the trampoline. The whole area is a birding mecca, and there are lots of quiet, safe dirt roads suitable for hiking, running, biking or riding surrounding the site. Practical facilities include an ablutions block with an accessible bathroom, grass stands with water and solar-power points (bring a 30-metre extension cable to connect to the power).

Local attractions

Birders can seek out the four hides dotted around Wakkerstroom – all of which can be reached in less than half an hour’s walk. Look out for cranes, bustards and rare pipits. Even if birds are not your thing, you’ll certainly appreciate the rare orchids and aloes scattered among the protected wetlands around Wakkerstroom Lake District (20 minutes’ walk), as well as the spectacular mountain views. If you’re into fishing, you can catch trout and carp around Zaaihoek Dam (20 minutes’ drive), and if you’re a bit of an adrenaline junkie, there are several hilltops where you can launch a paraglider for spectacular views over the lake. There is also a myriad of dirt roads suitable for hikes, mountain biking and high-altitude training in the mountain foothills. When you fancy exploring a bit further afield, head for Utrecht (an hour), to check out its colonial houses and military museum. This historic settlement sits on the edge of the Balele/Enlanzeni Valley Game Park (55 minutes), where you can spot zebras and giraffes wandering at will.
