Overlooking the Van Harinxma Canal between the Friesland villages of Ritsumazijl and Deinum, family-friendly Minicamping Van Harinxma has a peaceful rural setting set to a soundtrack of birdsong.
The grass pitches are spacious and level, with picnic tables and a swing in the middle of the camping field. Modern amenities have separate sections for men and women, each with a shower (you need tokens bought from the manager for hot water), sinks and loos, and other handy services include a washing machine and dryer. Everything is spotless and cleaned daily.
There’s fishing for bream and perch from the private pier and sailing on the canal, as well as cycling through Friesland’s flat landscapes. When it’s time to put your feet up, head for the chill-out area, where you can play darts, pool and ping-pong, read, watch TV or make new friends among fellow guests.
If you need a change of pace, the historic city of Leeuwarden, its gabled buildings and waterside restaurants are 20 minutes by bike from the campsite.

Powered grass and earth campsite
Liked: Beautiful place and newly refurbished facilities. Away from it all, yet plenty going on.
Disliked: When we visited, it wasn't quite finished (in fact, due to an administrative error, we weren't supposed to have booked at all, but our host was very accommodating)

Local attractions
As well as fishing, boating and cycling direct from the pitches, sporting activities on offer nearby include ice skating at the Elfstedenhal rink (10 minutes’ drive), mini golf at Het Buiten-Land Pitch & Putt (15 minutes), and a leafy golf course set around lakes (25 minutes). There’s also a swimming pool in Stiens (15 minutes) for any rainy-day distractions.
Still looking for more outdoor activity? Go hiking along the boardwalks in De Alde Feanen National Park (20 minutes), where you have a chance to see white storks nesting. Alternatively, get your dose of culture by touring traditional wooden Friesland cottages and farm buildings at De Spitkeet open-air museum (half an hour).
Leeuwarden (20 minutes by bike) has more than its fair share of historic buildings to admire, as well as art collections in the Princessehof and Fries museums, and street murals throughout the city – there’s a self-guided tour map for the latter. If all that sounds like hard work, rent an electric boat to putter around the canals or head to a waterside café for pancakes and coffee.
