How might you fancy waking to spectacular, other-worldly views of sand dunes? Spending the day with a bit of intrepid dune bashing? You’ll be in the right place at Les Pyramides Merzouga Camp then, as a stay there puts you just outside Merzouga (10 minutes’ drive), with fabulous views all around and easy access to all manner of sporting opportunities around the bright-red Erg Chebbi dunes.
The pitches have electric hook-ups and equally electrifying views over the desert. When you’re done looking at those views and want to get out among the dunes, the approachable site owner Ali can organise everything for you. Camel safaris, dune-bashing in four wheel drives or a desert feast? No problem, just catch him at reception and he'll do his best to get everything arranged.
The on-site auberge/restaurant is designed, decorated and furnished in traditional Moroccan style, and serves regional dishes for breakfast and lunch. Otherwise, stroll into the village of Merzouga (20 minutes’ walk) to pick up basics from the market (and hop on to wifi if you really must), and grill up a barbecue back at your pitch.
Facilities are pretty functional, with hot water in a communal shower block, plus a couple of washing-up sinks decorated with colourful tiles.

Local attractions
With the ever-shifting sand dunes of Erg Chebbi (10 minutes’ drive) so close, the first temptation is to get out and explore the northern reaches of the Sahara Desert. It’s how you do it that’s the question – by quad bike, on foot or on a sunset camel safari? All can be arranged at the campsite, as well as desert barbecues in traditional Berber style, sand bathing (an ancient Berber wellness therapy) and adrenaline-inducing dune-bashing in four wheel drives.
In fact, four wheel drives are such a popular method of transport around Merzouga that they have their own museum – the Morocco National 4x4 Auto Museum (10 minutes) features vintage jeeps, ex-military vehicles and futuristic land cruisers.
Surrounded by looming sand dunes, Lake Dayet Srij (10 minutes) can dry up in summer, but if you’re travelling between November and May, keen birders and walkers may see flocks of pink flamingos as well as warblers, hoopoes and birds of prey around the lake.
