  • Leafy site in a Maremma olive grove 10 minutes’ drive from Roccastrada
  • Petriolo Springs half an hour’s drive; San Galgano Abbey 45 minutes
  • Olive oil tastings, fresh vegetables to pick and local food available
Thanks to its location in the spectacular Maremma countryside, a stay at verdant Paradise Agricamp is guaranteed to be both peaceful and super-relaxing. The site is spread over 2.5 hectares of lush olive groves 10 minutes’ drive by dirt road from the pretty medieval village of Roccastrada, and doubles as a farm producing extra-virgin olive oil run by owners Parisa and Ale. Ale is an expert vegetable gardener, and you can pick fresh, seasonal vegetables from his two gardens – daily guided tours of the land are available, during which you can sample the zero-miles produce and learn about harvesting. Being also an excellent chef, Ale cooks traditional Maremma cuisine, including dishes based on game and porcini mushrooms, while Parisa conjures up Persian feasts on special foodie evenings. You can also join olive oil tastings and learn to prepare handmade ravioli at alfresco cooking classes; extra charges apply for all. On a practical level, there is a small outdoor pool with spectacular views over the surrounding hills, and many beautiful walks and cycle rides start from the site.

Local attractions

Look after your personal well-being with a free soak in the thermal springs at Petriolo (half an hour’s drive) on the Farma River, well-known for their therapeutic properties. Make a day of it with a visit to the monumental remains of 13th-century San Galgano Abbey (45 minutes) close by, or head for the gorgeous small town of Monticiano (40 minutes) for a wander round its ancient cobbled lanes. Castiglione della Pescaia (45 minutes) is another pretty settlement with medieval houses tumbling down a steep hill to the Tyrrhenian Sea, plus a sandy beach that’s safe for swimming and has a couple of beach clubs in the summer months. If you’re feeling like a challenge, clamber up winding trails to the peak of dormant volcano Monte Amiata (an hour); you’ll be rewarded with magnificent views over the lush forests of the Val d’Orcia in southern Tuscany. For gentler strolls, turn to coastal paths in the Parco Regionale della Maremma (also an hour), equally popular for cycling, kayaking, horse riding and fishing.
