On arrival at Area Sosta La Pampa in the Tuscan Maremma, you should expect a warm welcome from owners Dani and Jack. They have made sure that there are lots of little details to make life pleasant, including a play area for younger kids and communal barbecue facilities with an area selling local products, which should help to ward off growling tummies. The site is in Grosseto province’s sleepy hamlet of Il Cristo, and a mere 10 minutes’ walk from kitesurfing adventures down on Fiumara Beach. The spacious forest-floor pitches (shaded by mature pine trees) have access to facilities including shower blocks (with disabled access), charging points for your devices and a washing-up area so you can keep everything in your vehicle neat and ship-shape. There’s also no need to fret about security, as the site is well-monitored. When you're ready to venture out into the local area, you may want to start by sampling the regional delicacies in several local restaurants. Look out for Maremma meat and pasta dishes and accompany them with a glass of ruby-red Tuscan Morellino di Scansano wine.

Liked: L'area di sosta è un posto molto tranquillo, decisamente fresco grazie a tutti gli alberi non ci siamo mai svegliati morendo di caldo come è successo altre volte.
Fornito di tutti i servizi essenziali e si può anche ordinare carne o pesce da fare alla griglia.
Siamo stati molto bene, i proprietari sono disponibilissimi e molto gentili.

Local attractions

Wildlife lovers, be sure to bring your binoculars for photographing pink flamingos in the Diaccia Botrona Nature Reserve (10 minutes’ drive). You may be lucky enough to spot elusive wolves and wild cats slinking through the undergrowth in Maremma Regional Park (five minutes), but you’ll almost definitely see long-horned Maremma cattle, owls and hares as you hike or cycle through the park. Grab your bathers and head inland to Saturnia (an hour and 15 minutes) and hang out in the steaming therapeutic hot springs that tumble in steps down the hillside, or drive through the Val di Merse – a typical Tuscan backdrop of snubby hillocks dotted with stately cypress trees – to have a wander around the impressive Gothic skeleton of Abbazia di San Galgano (an hour and 10 minutes). Alternatively, you might prefer to stick close to home. Meander down to Kite Beach Fiumara (10 minute’s walk) and hire a kite board to take out on the reliable waves. If you’re a complete novice, no problems, as gear hire and lessons are available on the sands. Too much like hard work? Have a dip in the sea and then grab a lounger from one of the beach lidos and chill in the sun.
