Surrounded by olive trees, prickly pears, grapefruits and fragrant rosemary, it’s certainly very peaceful at Orto Siculo in Sicily. You might call this place a wildlife haven, and that’s true. Designed for wild camping, this is an open space primed for a simple sort of relaxation. Flick through your book, have a snooze or gather your gear together and head out towards local beaches, the city or surrounding nature reserves… Syracuse, an ancient Sicilian city, is just 10 minutes’ drive from your base. Whether you go there for a cooking class, wine tasting or a walking tour of all the sights, it’s likely to be a lively day. Neapolis Archaeological Park (10 minutes) includes a Roman amphitheatre and the limestone cave named the Ear of Dionysius. On the city’s Island of Ortigia, there’s a cathedral, castle and a handful of other spectacular historical sites. If the sea is the first thing on your mind, and you want it fast, Arenella Beach (10 minutes) and Fontane Bianche Beach (20 minutes) are two splendid options. Of course, there are many more small coves whenever you want a hike around the coast, with plenty of dips in the Med to cool off. As a wild camping site, there are no bathrooms at Orto Siculo, meaning you’ll need to bring your own toilet facilities. There's also no drinking water or electricity. The local villages, just five minutes’ drive away, have all the shops and restaurants you’ll need for provisions and delicious meals out.

Local attractions

It’s easy to stroll around Syracuse for hours, with the number of historical sites, beaches and eateries around the city. However, one place where you’ll be able to get in more steps is around the Riserva Naturale Cavagrande del Cassibile (40 minutes’ drive). With a river canyon, limestone rocks, ancient tombs and swimming holes, you’ll likely want to dedicate a whole day to exploring, hiking and swimming there. On those days where you’d rather stick closer to the site, a short walk will get you to Fonte Ciane (35 minutes’ walk). This small but splendid nature reserve has boardwalks and plenty of wildlife for you to scout out. Towards the coast, you might want to take a look at the Cave of Pillirina (15 minutes' drive) too. Ways to get there include a hike from the coast or taking a sailing boat from the local beaches. You might want to ask a local about the legend while you're at it.
