  • Small and quiet Catania site half an hour’s drive from Mount Etna
  • Piedimonte Etneo 15 minutes’ drive; Mascali beach clubs 25 minutes
  • Pool with volcano views; bars and shops within 20 minutes’ drive
New in 2025, Catania’s Camping Belvedere occupies a very fine site indeed, right at the foot of Mount Etna and just 15 minutes’ drive from the spectacular and historic town of Piedimonte Etneo. It’s located on the road towards Presa, a lively village and cultural hub with a couple of ethnographic museums and spectacular vistas towards the Ionian Sea. This pocket-size site has level grass pitches where views take in the peak of Etna; electric hook-ups, a water supply and sustainable loos and showers housed in upcycled wooden huts are all available. There’s a large outdoor pool (admission fee applies) surrounded by terraced olive groves and overlooking Etna, and you can be out hiking or cycling on the slopes of the volcano in about half an hour’s drive. In around 20 minutes by car, there are several small villages filled with baroque-era architecture to have a nose around, and where you will also find grocery stores, bars and trattorias. Golf and tennis can be played nearby, and several Sicilian wineries are open for tours and tastings within 15 minutes’ drive.

Local attractions

Etna (half an hour’s drive) will probably be your first stop, either for self-led hikes and bike rides in the foothills of the volcano or guided quad bike and MTB tours of the terrain. For anyone preferring to discover the volcano in comfort, sections of the Ferrovia Circumetnea narrow-gauge railway around the base of the mountain are open; your nearest station is Piedimonte Etneo (15 minutes’ drive). With its baroque architecture and café-lined piazzas, Piedimonte Etneo is a gorgeous place to spend time nosing around. More urban delights are found in Catania (40 minutes), known for its old town, markets and Etna views from the dome of Chiesa della Badia di Sant’Agata. Another historic attraction is the millennia-old Castagno dei Cento Cavalli (‘chestnut tree of 100 horses’, 25 minutes), thought to be the oldest chestnut tree in the world. Day at the beach on the cards? Head for the sandy expanse at Spiaggia di San Marco di Calatabiano (half an hour) or the popular lido clubs in Mascali (25 minutes). If you prefer to stay closer to your pitch, discover the hinterland of Mount Etna aboard sturdy donkeys (10 minutes).
