Olive trees are a very fine thing to see surrounding your pitches – partly because of the welcome shade they cast on fine days and partly because a whole cluster of them generally means that you’ll be staying in a peaceful place that looks after its produce.
And so it is indeed with Agricamping Le Cannatare, a relaxed Apulia site with pitches surrounded by gorgeous olive groves on Ninfeo olive farm. The farm’s olive-based products and other fresh organic fruit and veg can be bought on site (with olive oil tastings available so you can check out what the team have been up to). If you fancy getting properly stuck into the olive experience, you’re welcome to lend a hand if you’re here at harvest time.
It’s not just shade that the pitches have going for them – each one is a spacious 80 square metres and equipped with electricity and drinking water. Toilets, showers (indoor or outdoor depending on your appetite for fresh air) and a washing machine are close by. A wifi area and barbecue area are also provided, and guests can hire bikes to take out on local paths around country and coast.
And where might such outings take you? Well, perhaps to the historic village of Felline for shops and restaurants – walk down there in half an hour or drive in five minutes. Also close by are Ugento, with a fascinating history stretching back several millennia, and the seaside resort of Torre San Giovanni, for six splendid kilometres of fine sandy beach. It’s about a 10-minute drive to either of these, but the site also runs a shuttle in high season for easy jaunts to the beach.

Local attractions
For a taste of local history, take a wander around Ugento (10 minutes’ drive) to see its castle, cathedral and museums, or head coastwards to gallivant around Gallipoli (25 minutes), taking in its castle and other ancient buildings before hitting the beach.
If you’d rather head straight to the beach, set forth for Torre San Giovanni (10 minutes), which has smart serviced areas and more natural parts backed by woodlands to walk in. Other coastal options worth a look are Santa Maria di Leuca (half an hour) for boat trips to see sea caves, and Castro (45 minutes), a fishing village with boat trips and canoe outings.
Head back inland by day to sip samples at the wineries around Melissano (10 minutes) or by night to gaze through the powerful telescopes at Sidereus astronomy park (20 minutes) – the tours here are limited in number so it’s worth booking ahead.
