Dreaming of a camping holiday under the warming southern Italian sun, with a sandy beach and lively seaside town close by? Peruse the pics of Agriturismo Fontanelle, in southern Italy’s Salento region, as chances are it’s a good match for you. Set in the grounds of a historic farmhouse, the grass pitches here sit in the shade of the pine trees, which is most welcome on those days when the sun is particularly strong. A path leads directly from the pitches down through the trees and to the Bay of Turks (five minutes’ stroll). And should you tire of the sun and the sand (not likely, is it?), head straight for lovely Otranto (10 minutes’ drive or a bus ride away) for an evening of bar hopping with sea views. The eco-conscious site owners do much to ensure that food kilometres are kept to a minimum: they have their own organic food brand for sale in the shop and café (open in high summer), including such staples as olive oil and tomato purées. You can also nab locally made breads and pastries, wines and cheeses as well as seasonal Fontanelle-grown fruit and veg. And the practicalities? Spacious pitches have electric hook-ups and access to a very smart communal shower block with a clutch of amenities like washing machines (extra charge) and washing-up areas to make life more than comfortable.

Liked Il campeggio merita tutte le stelle che ho dato..posto incantevole, nei pressi di una pineta e non lontano da un mare cristallino....peccato pero che prenotando dal sito, mi ha fatto selezionare la prenotazione con pitchup e con enorme sorpresa ho scoperto di aver pagato una commissione extra di 30 euro !! (pensavo invece fosse la caparra del campeggio stesso)...assolutamente scorretto per cui attenzione!!!

Disliked prenotazione con pitchup che si prende 30 euro (praticamente il 20% del soggiorno) per fare esattamente nulla!!! Chiamate direttamente il campeggio per prenotare

Area con i servizi puliti e funzionali.
Comoda per il bus per andare a Otranto o Torre dell'orso

Disliked Niente ombra se vuoi la piazzola con elettricità.
Manca un piccolo bar/ritrovo per bere almeno un caffè

Liked Nous avons aimé la proximité de la mer, la pinède pour trouver la fraîcheur, la propreté des sanitaires

Disliked Il n'y a pas d'emplacement tente avec électricité. Nous nous sommes retrouvés au milieu des campings car, donc sans aucune ombre.
L'amabilité du personnel est parfois limite.

Primitive forest floor campsite

Liked Wir hatten einen Platz im Schatten ohne Strom gebucht, wo wir aber morgens etwas Sonne für die Solaranlage hatten.
Die Duschen & Toiletten waren sehr Sauber & im neuen Zusand .
Wir haben uns dort sehr wohl gefühlt , die Begrüßung war freundlich
Wir können diesen Platz ohne Einschränkungen weiter empfehlen

Liked Nicely kept entrance and reception area with little shop. Lovely owner who charmingly tries to explain the amenities in English. Pitches with and without electricity. Those with are spacious. Only complaint would be that they lack privacy but that is hard to find anywhere in Italy. Clean and well equiped bathroom facilities with toiletpaper and seats. One has to use a bracelet to activate the showers and washing machine (at extra cost). A doorstep away through a lovely pineforest to gorgeous beach. By bike its half an hour to beautiful Otranto. Possibility to order bread and local veg which is delivered to your pitch in the morning. Would recommend!

Disliked As said, lack of privacy but Italians don't seem to mind!

Liked Ein wunderschöner Platz mit sehr sauberen sanitären Anlagen und einem freundlichen Besitzer. Er pflegt den ganzen Tag die Anlage. Man kann Früchte und Obst kaufen. Es ist sehr ruhig und angenehm.

Disliked Zuviel Laternen. Aber ich weiß, die Menschen wollen viel Licht. Ich mag lieber Sterne.

Local attractions

Of course, the soft sands of the Bay of Turks are accessed straight from the campsite, but if you’d like to see more of Salento, several coastal trails lead to the rocky beaches and cliffs of remote Punta Palascia and its landmark lighthouse. Just a bit further down the coast is Porto Badisco (20 minutes’ drive), where an often-deserted sandy beach sits in a rocky inlet with sea grottos to swim into. Another lovely wild spot is Alimini Lakes (20 minutes’ walk), with two lakes that are home to herons and flamingos; it’s popular for wild swimming, forest walks and boat cruises. Otranto (10 minutes’ drive) is the easternmost town in Italy, and surely deserves a visit for its lovely location overlooking the Adriatic Sea, a nose around the Romanesque cathedral and its mosaics and to tour the 15th-century castle in the town’s former defence walls. Alternatively you could avoid all that, and head straight for a beachfront bar to put your feet up in the sun with a glass of chilled white wine.
