The clifftop views from this smashing site… well, they're just spectacular. High up near Trieste and the Italian-Slovenian border, the jaw-dropping locale of Camping Village Mare Pineta Baia Sistiana has views across to Slovenia and Croatia on a clear day, and the clear blue waters of the Adriatic Sea edged by beach below. Reach the beach 500 metres under your clifftop perch via the tourist train that runs every hour from the site, or by taking the path down if you're feeling energetic (it's a bit steep so not recommended for the less mobile or for the very young). The beach is public and pebbly but safe for all ages. If you'd rather sink into these sublime sunny surroundings on site instead, take your sun gear and shades to the sand and sunbeds on the terrace, to work on your tan while gazing dreamily (again) on the sea views. (A small charge is made to access the terrace to avoid overcrowding.) The site also has a modern pool complex, with a pool for adults and another for kids, connected by a waterfall; a whirlpool is here too, and more sunbathing spots at the poolside. A site restaurant overlooks the pools for tasty bites and more scenic views. (You should also have a bite or a drink at Café Rilke, just along the coast path overlooking the sea; for a lively vibe, Bay of Sistiana pubs and clubs are within a 10-minute stroll.) A full schedule of daily entertainment and activities for all ages runs on site, including beach football, beach volleyball, aerobics, aqua gym, dancing, tennis and forays out into the local area.

Liked: The site was spotless, toilet and shower facilities are the best I've seen.

The staff were very friendly and helpful and the free little train to the beach is a great idea.

Disliked: Only 1 laundry area, which is at the other end of the site.

Liked: The beautiful location - nice sea view, swimming pool is cool (clean, enought of space, just right temperature), everybody likes
the cute train - free of charge transportation between camp and beaches, never found uncleaned spot, kinda big camp parking place in tree shadow, personnel always smile, many trip options around to choose from,...every base needs are really functional

Disliked: using swimming cap - anyway some people dont use it

Local attractions

The bay here is acclaimed as one of the most stunning spots on the Adriatic, so wherever you potter to, bring a camera, a picnic and significant amount of time to stop and stare. Stroll the Rilke Promenade near the site, named after the poet Rainer Maria Rilke, who stayed at nearby Duino Castle and found writerly inspiration in the region to begin his influential Duino Elegies. The castle dates back to the 14th century and these days is open to the public as a museum and park. About 20 kilometres south along the coast is the department capital of glitzy Trieste, one of the richest cities in all of Italy. Its seafront and Piazza Unità d'Italia are pretty places to wander: make for the synagogue (the second biggest in Europe), the Temple of Monte Grisa, and the empire remains of the city including the theatre and the Roman walls for other famed sites.
