The Costa Viola, or the Violet Coast as it’s also known, isn’t short on sweet scenery. Among those wild beaches and fishing villages, there’s a gorgeous dog-friendly site just 100 metres away from the sea. Under five minutes’ walk from the beach, a fishing port and a marina where guests can take a boat trip or rent their own boat or raft, Area Sosta Camper Prajola will set up all adventurers very nicely. On Lungomare di Palmi, the site is halfway between the Gioia Tauro and Palmi motorway junctions, meaning it’s just as accessible from the south as it is from the north. Fenced and guarded, there are toilets, a washing machine and hot showers, as well as night lighting to help with any midnight toilet trips. There are local bus links to Palmi city centre, which is otherwise a 15-minute drive away from the site. Those wanting another mode of transport for excursions or shopping can rent the site’s Panda petrol car. Upon request, the staff can also accompany guests to the Gioia Tauro train station for regional train trips to Scilla, Reggio Calabria, Pizzo and Tropea. Palmi and the Violet Coast have heaps of historical, artistic, archaeological and heritage sites. Larger groups can request organised day trips on a minibus or coach (with or without a driver) to the Ionian coast too, to places like Locri and Gerace for instance, or to Aspromonte and the paths from the Gambarie park centre. Got your eyes on getting to know the local gastronomy too? The site runs local cooking lessons, following shopping trips to the local gardens.

Local attractions

Take in The Violet Coast by sea… there are grottos, coves, neolithic caves, towns with Greek legends and fishing villages specialising in mouth-watering seafood. Scilla (half an hour’s drive or a short boat ride from the local marina, under five minutes’ walk away) is a fishing village with a medieval castle, old fishing houses and jetty-style seafood restaurants. Any day where you’re in the mood for a hike, just hit up the Il Tracciolino (20 minutes) mountain path. The 1930s route was carved out for a mountain railway and has meadows, a dam, rock carvings and sea views. Parco Archeologico Dei Tauriani (half an hour’s walk) above the site has neolithic remains and makes for a stunning walk too. Get a taste of Calabria’s culture in Casa della cultura Leonida Repaci (15 minutes’ drive), which has weaving artefacts and other remnants of the local history. In Seminara (20 minutes), there are historic kilns. Pick up some of the town’s popular ceramics while you’re browsing the shops.

Liked: Area sosta camper situata di fronte al mare con piazzole molto spaziose (alcune ombreggiate) con possibilità di aprire la tenda. Carico e scarico delle acque, bagni puliti e completi con acqua calda compresa nel prezzo, lavello per lavare le stoviglie, lavello per lavare panni a mano nonché l'utilizzo della lavatrice. Posizionato in zona strategica, nelle vicinanze negozio di alimentari bar e ristoranti. Vicino alla fermata del bus per spostarsi in paese ma il proprietario mette anche a disposizione il servizio noleggio auto su prenotazione. Gianni il proprietario è gentile e disponibile assicurando ordine e sicurezza nella struttura.

Disliked: Unica pecca se la struttura è al completo (nel periodo estivo) c'è rischio che salti la corrente (per via dell'utilizzo dei condizionatori) il tutto dura pochi minuti il personale provvede subito al ripristino

Liked: Friendly and helpful staff. Beautiful location. Walkable to restaurants. Convenient to ferry.

Disliked: Pitches were a bit small for our 7.5 m motor home.
Washroom and showers could be updated. Place is a bit tired.

Liked: Friendly welcome. Clean facilities. Handy for ferry to Messina.

Disliked: Cramped campsite. It was tiny but we were rammed in and they even sawed a branch off a tree to get another motor home in. Unisex facilities with no locks on doors - actually no doors! Not really near any shops for fresh food. Beach very near but so much litter.
