Caribbean getaway anyone? A stay at Pop Lodge, 10 minutes’ drive from the laidback settlement of Pointe-Noire on the leeward (western) side of spectacular Guadeloupe, will give you far-reaching views over the richly forested Mamelles mountain peaks. It will also give you cosy accommodation in spacious bell tents, each furnished with queen-size beds, handy bedside tables and lights. All bed linen and towels are supplied, along with unusual touches like locally produced baskets for storage. Ventilation windows and mosquito nets, electrical outlets, air conditioning, a mini-iron and a hairdryer come as standard. There are simple private bathrooms with showers for each tent, and a communal kitchen which is open to the sunny elements and equipped with a kettle, microwave, refrigerator and hob. The site also features a shared swimming pool and barbecue area. A local breakfast is available as an additional option; alternatively, there are a few chilled cafés serving Créole dishes in Pointe-Noire, and a well-stocked small supermarket five minutes’ drive away.

Local attractions

Massages with homemade oils are bookable at Pop Lodge, which also offers agro-processing activities, so depending on the season, you can take part in vanilla fertilisation, coffee processing and cassava-flour production. If that piques your interest, you can tour a local vanilla farm or cocoa plantation (both five minutes’ drive). To explore further afield, you can ramble up to the Acomat Falls (40 minutes’ walk) – by the time you get there you’ll be ready for a cooling dip in the pool below the cascade. More challenging hikes and bike rides lead through the Mamelles (15 minutes’ drive) for spectacular views over the tropical forest of Guadeloupe National Park. More high-octane action is found on the rope courses at Le Tapeur (also 15 minutes), or you can try glass-bottomed boat rides, diving, snorkelling and kayaking at pebbled Caribbean Beach (five minutes), where you will catch some of the most stunning sunsets on the island.
