  • Simple, quiet pitches in the grounds of a Black Forest country house
  • In Hotzenwald; 20 minutes' drive to the Rhine river and Swiss border
  • Wildlife haven in a good location for waterfall walks or winter sports
What a gorgeous setting for an outdoor break… the pitches at Schwarzwald Escape are in the grounds of a country house on the edge of the village of Rotzingen. As the name suggests, this site is in the Black Forest, so you can expect to be surrounded by lovely old trees when you stay here – and quite probably spot plenty of wildlife as well. It’s a very peaceful, rural and secluded spot with simple pitches that have access to basic facilities including toilets, picnic tables and a launderette. The town of Görwihl is about five minutes’ drive away for shops and the like, and the Rhine river (which marks the Swiss border) is 20 minutes away. You may well feel like you’re hidden away in the heart of the forest, but in fact you’ll be well located for all sorts of outings including hikes (especially waterfall walks), cycling, golf and toboggan runs in summer and downhill or cross-country skiing in the winter months.

Primitive grass and gravel campsite

Liked: Great location, we stopped briefly on our way to Italy, but would have happily stayed longer. Toilets were nice and clean, and the family were nice and welcoming.

Disliked: Shower would have been nice, but we knew there was not one and were prepared

Primitive grass and gravel campsite

Primitive grass and gravel campsite

Liked: Super bel endroit !

Primitive grass and gravel campsite

Sehr empfehlenswert! Wir würden wieder kommen.

Liked: It was mostly quiet, and the couple running it were lovely and helpful.

Disliked: Right by a main road loud as of 6am. Had to pay in order to use a bathroom.

Local attractions

Bring your walking shoes along, because there are lots of fantastic trails to follow around this area. Some of the real highlights are water-based, as this region is well known for its waterfalls, like Höllbachwasserfall (10 minutes’ drive) and Todtnauer waterfalls (40 minutes). There’s also the option of following the Kulturwanderweg Estelberg (15 minutes), marked by information boards introducing the area and its people. Sticking to the outdoor activities, you might like to visit the cute residents of Hotzenwald-Alpaka (five minutes), play a round at Golfclub Rickenbach (15 minutes) or climb the 90 steps of the Gugelturm observation tower (15 minutes) for fabulous views across the forest. If the weather isn’t so good, step inside one of the Black Forest’s oldest houses at Freilichtmuseum Klausenhof (10 minutes), walk among tanks, guns and military memorabilia at Swiss Military Museum Full (35 minutes), or head underground to see the stalactites at Erdmannshöhle (half an hour).
