  • Solar-heated pool and restaurant with beer garden
  • Big playground available
Your tinies should be chuffed indeed with a stay at Freizeitpark Camping Schüttehof, a peaceful woodland and hilltop site in the Freudenstadt district of Germany's Baden-Württemberg region. There's loads of room to play at all times either around the grounds or at the large adventure playground. And if you have a teenager? They may deign to accompany you on a hol to this area in August, to hone their best air guitar skills at the Mini-Rock-Festival of Horb am Neckar, organised solely by the town's teens. And for the grownups? Well, there's rather a lot around to tickle your holiday fancy too. Horb am Neckar is a popular starting point for day trips of all types around the Swabian Alps and the Black Forest, and its Neckar river setting is a popular place in south-west Germany for boat trips and river cruises around 60 or so handsome Baden-Württemberg towns and villages. If you're more up for roaming around or staying put on site, there's an outdoor pool to relax in or alongside, chess and table tennis to practise your moves at, and a communal lounge for cosy evenings. You'll likely want to spend significant time in the restaurant and beer garden too, to sample Swabian specialities and cold local beers in these green and scenic surrounds: both restaurant and beer garden are open for 12 hours a day six days a week, so you can settle down for a long relaxed spell in between your active and sightseeing days. Freizeitpark Camping Schüttehof is in a wooded wildlife haven in the northern Black Forest, at an altitude of 550 metres and 100 metres above Horb am Neckar. It has a guest kitchen, a laundry with washing machines and dryers, and a washing-up area. A mini market sells essentials and camping gas; barbecues and campfires are both allowed.

FHU grass campsite (comfort)

Liked Everything, there was nothing to dislike. Set out well, very friendly staff and campers. Great pool facilities, shower toilets washing rooms etc. All immaculately kept. Restaurant and bar on site served excellent food and good variety of drink. All in all a great site.

Disliked Nothing

Crowded campervan area and town not as close as you think.

Liked The staff were all very friendly and helpful, the on-site restaurant had a limited menu but produced tasty, well priced meals. The swimming pool is large. The sanitary facilities were clean and modern. There was a small shop and bread could be ordered for the next day.

Disliked The pitches are too small, meaning vans are squeezed together with little privacy. When sitting outside, your view is the side of you neighbour's van.. There are 2 toilet blocks but the one with plenty of space is the one furthest from the tent/campervan area. There were only 10 loungers provided around the pool, on a site for a couple of hundred people. The nearby town of Horb is 25 mins walk and the walk back up is very steep. There seems to be a taxi/bus service but the site receptionist was unable to give us any information about it. Paying for showers on top of quite a high site fee always annoys but that seems to be the way in Germany.

Great site/staff.Just note taxi fare is per person to the local town.

Local attractions

The pretty town of Horb am Neckar, 100 metres below the site, is on the eastern border of the Black Forest's northern part, and is a starting point for several day trips into the forest. If you want to wander around its streets for some time first, there's a nicely preserved Old Town to explore, an ancient castle with gardens, and a traditional marketplace overlooking the Neckar. Black Forest town tourists should also have some time at the historic settlement of Dornstetten (15 minutes away), to amble around its half-timbered houses (Dornstetten is on the German Half-Timbered House Road or Deutsche Fachwerkstraße, running from Mosbach to Haslach im Kinzigtal). Nearby, the barefoot park in in Hallwangen has a two and a half kilometre path to potter along sans shoes and socks, via several information points covering the local nature. Freudenstadt, 25 minutes away, has been a health resort for aeons, seeing the likes of Mark Twain and George V among its illustrious visitors. It's also home to Germany's biggest marketplace to spend much money at; if you'd like to shop yet more but also ditch the car, trains to Stuttgart, Eutingen and Offenburg run from here. Take a break from the shopping simply to admire the pretty pieces on display at Pforzheim Jewellery Museum (an hour away) – here you can explore the history of jewellery across the ages, admire the splendid setting in the Reuchlinhaus and sign up for weekend group tours and kids' treasure hunts. For a highly amusing day, Germany's biggest theme park, Europa-Park, is just under two hours away at Rust.
