  • Family-friendly site 10 minutes’ walk from Lake Artignosc in the Var
  • Gorges du Verdon an hour's drive; 35 minutes to Gréoux-les-Bains
  • Outdoor pool, restaurant, canoe/paddleboard hire and kids’ club
It’s all about the natural surroundings at Camping Liberté Verdon. There are spectacular landscapes all around at this Var site, which is in a wooded area about 10 minutes’ walk from Lake Artignosc and five minutes’ drive from Artignosc-sur-Verdon. This is an enviable spot indeed, tucked in between the Verdon Regional Natural Park (to the east) and Luberon Regional Natural Park (to the west) and about an hour’s drive from the stunning Gorges du Verdon, an area of dramatic canyons and rocky cliffs carved by emerald waters. All of that means some fantastic options for hiking, mountain biking and scenic drives. Needless to say, watersports are also pretty popular pastimes here, so bring your canoe for epic trips along the river Verdon. No gear? No worries – the site hires out kayaks and paddleboards, and an activity centre on the lakefront has pedal boats that are great for a family outing. There’s also scope for wild swimming – but if you don’t fancy that you can just take a dip in the outdoor pool back on site. Other leisure amenities on site include a football pitch, volleyball court and pétanque court; there’s also a kids’ club that runs things like games and creative workshops in high season. To keep everyone fed for all this activity, the site has a restaurant, a snack bar and a mini market that sells local produce and offers fresh bread and pastries every morning. In a nod to sustainability, the site runs a zero-waste scheme that encourages guests to ‘replenish’ a hanging basket with non-perishable products that they might not want to take home at the end of their holiday.

Local attractions

Once you’ve had a go at paddling on the lake by the site, maybe you’d like to take your skills over to the spectacular Gorges du Verdon (an hour’s drive)? Canoeing, rafting and paddleboarding are all popular here, and boat tours into the Grotte des Gorges du Verdon (half an hour) are also highly recommended. Horse riding and climbing are close by as well, along with the chance to swing through the treetops at Canyon parc (35 minutes). For a more leisurely day, perhaps head to the thermal waters of Gréoux-les-Bains (35 minutes), take a dip from the lake beach at Plage Saint-Julien (50 minutes) or take an afternoon nap ready for an evening looking up into the stars at Observatoire astronomique de Bauduen (20 minutes). For some city time, aim for Aix-en-Provence (an hour and a quarter) to see the art at Atelier Cézanne, Musée Granet and Hotel de Caumont, dine in top-notch local restaurants and browse the colourful markets for food, flowers and other bits.
