  • Quiet Gorges du Verdon campsite five minutes’ drive from Castellane
  • Adventure Forest five minutes’ drive and Lac de Castillon 10 minutes
  • Swimming pool and pizza restaurant; supermarket five minutes’ walk
Rest and relaxation are what it’s all about at Camping L’Eden Road, a leafy and sun-dappled site tucked between the rivers and mountains of the Gorges du Verdon. Sheltered by mature trees, this peaceful spot is five minutes’ drive from the cobbled alleyways of gorgeous Castellane, backed by steep cliffs and classed as a Provençal ‘small town of character’. When you’re not off exploring the department of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence or indulging in extreme sports in the Gorges du Verdon, stick around on site for lazy afternoons swimming laps of the pool or soaking up the rays on the sundeck. Any toddlers can stay out of mischief in the playground while you put your feet up. Practicalities-wise, there’s a food service all day – from breakfast (discounted for campsite guests) until the last person leaves at night – in the restaurant, which does a good line in pizzas freshly made to order. The shower blocks are spotless, and you have use of a laundry room with a washing machine and dryer. Handily, there’s a supermarket about five minutes’ walk away for stocking up on essentials, and a scattering of cafés and bistros in Castellane if you fancy a change of scenery.

Power optional grass and earth travel trailer campsite

Liked: Welcoming and helpful hosts. Toilets and showers kept very clean. Some facilities in a heated area which is good for cooler weather. Great location for the town - a 10 minute walk if that, and a supermarket a few minutes walk away.
Lovely hike up to the little church on the hill and some nice cycling with breathtaking views.

Disliked: Next to a road so traffic in the daytime but no disturbance at night. The river was low so we couldn’t do the rafting which was disappointing but we walked and cycled instead.

Local attractions

This Alpes-de-Haute-Provence campsite is at the gateway to the Gorges de Verdon, a spectacular backdrop to extreme sports including canoeing, kayaking and white-water rafting down the Verdon river from Castellane (five minutes’ drive). Adrenaline junkies can try bungee jumping (45 minutes), canyoning and hydrospeeding (both five minutes) through the water, or have a go on the zipwires straddling the gorge at Adventure Forest (also five minutes). If that’s a bit too hard core for you, stroll over the Barrage de Castillon dam and go wild swimming in Lac de Castillon (both 10 minutes), or take a subterranean tour of the vividly illuminated limestone formations in the Grotte de la Baume Obscure (55 minutes). Combine a morning ramble with a history lesson for the kids; pack a picnic and hike up from Clue de la Melle (40 minutes) to the tumbledown Chapelle de la Melle (20 minutes’ walk) to find the plaque commemorating Resistance fighters murdered during World War II.
