  • Peaceful dog-friendly rural site in the grounds of a family home
  • A 10-minute drive from lake activities and 15 minutes from Confolens
  • Bicycle hire on site; shops, cafés and bars a short ride away
Whether it’s a stopover on the D951 that brings you here or the desire to spend a bit of time exploring the Charente countryside, you’ll get a friendly welcome at La Libellule – this small site near Saint-Laurent-de-Céris is in the peaceful grounds of a family home. This area is all about cute country villages and relaxing riverside views – arguably best explored by bike. It’s handy, then, that you can hire bikes on site to get around and explore on two wheels. If you’re driving instead, you can get to the medieval town of Confolens in about 15 minutes, or journey for 10 minutes to reach a lake with a bar, restaurant and swimming as well as places to walk or go fishing. Facilities on site are minimal – toilets, showers and fresh water are available. Dogs are welcome but will need to be kept on leads (although private, the grounds are not fully fenced). For meals and snacks, there’s a restaurant half a kilometre away, with more options for eating and shopping five minutes’ drive away in Saint-Laurent-de-Céris or up in Confolens.

Local attractions

If you’ve only got time to do one thing while you’re here, make it a trip to Confolens (15 minutes’ drive). The medieval town is a lovely place to wander around, with historic houses lining the riverbanks, a fortified bridge and a church with a Gothic bell tower. A trip at any time is rewarding, but it’s arguably at its best in August, when the Festival de Confolens has live music and kids’ events popping up all over town. Beyond that, there are a couple of excellent châteaux to explore – both the medieval Château de Peyras (15 minutes) and the grand Château de La Rochefoucauld (25 minutes), with a staircase that’s said to have been designed by Leonardo da Vinci. Angoulême (45 minutes) is well worth a trip too, for its cathedral, Roman ramparts and cartoon museum. For a bit of downtime, head to Plan d'Eau Prés de Peyras (10 minutes), where you can swim, go for a walk or do some fishing before having a meal or drinks in the bar-restaurant.
