Les Toiles du Cassis

- Luxurious waterside hideaway on a Charente wine estate
- Angoulême and Cognac 25 minutes’ drive; boat hire 15 minutes
- Well-equipped bell tent with decking overlooking a fishing pond
Attention anyone with a taste for outdoor adventure while enjoying a cosy bed and a few luxuries… It’s time to escape to a wine estate deep in the Charente with your beloved. You’ll certainly strike a romantic note with a stay at Les Toiles du Cassis, five minutes’ drive from the village of Plassac-Rouffiac, as you can bask in the lap of luxury amid pristine nature – and get a very stylish bell tent all to yourselves.
With a completely private lakeside setting and a small sandy beach just a few steps away, this is a magical adults-only hideaway. The spacious bell tent has a queen-size bed, plenty of storage, comfy seating and cosy decor and linen. Some basic bits and bobs like glasses and lamps are provided, while close by are wooden amenities with a wash basin and hot shower, plus toiletries on hand.
What to do first? Watch the fish rise in the lake (don’t forget to bring your fishing rod) from your exclusive-use decking, snooze in the sun, catch up on your reading and marvel at starry skies by night. This place couldn’t be more relaxing if it tried.
And if you’re quiet while you go about your days at the site, you may well glimpse deer, woodpeckers and owls, and keep a look out for rare flowers as you explore the surrounding forest on foot.

Local attractions
While you’re staying in the Charente, don’t miss out on exploring historic Angoulême (25 minutes’ drive), where you can meander cobbled streets in Le Plateau district and admire masterly stained-glass in the treasury at the Romanesque-era cathedral. This is a foodie city too, so go foraging for local cheeses and foie gras at gourmet Marché des Halles, or pick up speciality macarons from smart delis.
Another local bucket-list attraction is the formal water garden at Jardins du Logis de Forge (five minutes), which comes packed with Italian-style statuary, fountains and neat parterres backed by a photogenic château. There’s also the 10th-century Château de Cognac – with a centuries-old distillery attached to it – to tour in Cognac (25 minutes), where you can also taste local brandy at big-name cognac houses including Martell and Rémy Martin.
If you’d prefer to be out and about in nature, try canoeing or paddleboarding on the Charente River (15 minutes), or take the more leisurely option and hire a motorboat to tootle downriver through leafy countryside instead.
