  • Small and quiet site on an old farm in the Charente countryside
  • Angoulême and Caves Quéroy within half an hour's drive
  • Massages on site; barbecue available for guests to borrow
Chill out in the Charente countryside – Les Petites Martinies is a small, calm and quiet site where you’ll be able to soak up the serene surroundings of a lovely natural meadow that’s part of an old farm. Your hosts Julien and Mirjam are keen to preserve the quiet rural vibe of the place, so they’ve steered clear of installing lots of facilities, preferring instead to enhance the guest experience by focusing on the essentials. With that in mind, there’s a comfortable modern toilet block with facilities for guests with reduced mobility, and various other handy additions including picnic tables and a barbecue (available to borrow free of charge). Mirjam’s also a trained masseuse so you may be able to request a massage if you need a bit of help getting properly relaxed. This is a proper countryside location, surrounded by green farmland and with the small village of Magnac-Lavalette-Villars about five minutes’ drive away. Bigger urban spaces aren’t far off though – Villebois-Lavalette (which has a supermarket) is 10 minutes’ drive away, and the attractive city of Angoulême about half an hour. Prefer the rural life? There are plenty of options for countryside activities and attractions nearby, whether you choose to explore your Charente surroundings or cross into the neighbouring Dordogne for hikes in the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked I chose this site as a halfway point on my way from the ferry to the Pyrennees so only stayed 1 night.
Nice quite grassy site. No pitches marked out, just pitch wherever you want.

Disliked The ownership/management was a bit odd. No one in the house when I arrived, then several hours later a young woman got out of a motorhome and came over with a card machine. There was another couple with a child there who seemed to be with her, and there was very much a feeling of ownership about them. There was a friendly cat on site which the man at one point fired his water pistol at. On the whole they made me feel uncomfortable and as if I was intruding on their private campsite.

Local attractions

There are plenty of places to get out for a walk around here, whether you’re hoping for a long hike through the scenery of the Périgord-Limousin Regional Natural Park (15 minutes’ drive) or a more gentle stroll around some of the area’s historic buildings. If you’re more in the mood for the latter, plan trips to Château de Villebois-Lavalette (10 minutes), a large site where restoration works are ongoing and various cultural events take place through the year, and the grand Château de la Mercerie (also 10 minutes). There’s also the chance to have a fascinating underground walk at Caves Quéroy (25 minutes) or to explore the man-made caves at Les cluzeaux d’Argentine (15 minutes). Angoulême (half an hour) is well worth a day out too – the city is nicknamed the ‘balcony of the southwest’ because of its elevated position, and it has some lovely views across the surrounding area. It’s a very arty place too, with lots of street art to look out for and the fabulous Musée de la Bande Dessinée to visit.
