  • Small friendly site in a peaceful hamlet in south-west France
  • Supermarkets, food markets, bars, restaurants and shops within 10 mins
  • Pool, sun loungers, parasols and food shop
The owners of Camping La Forêt de Tessé in Charente picked a prime spot to settle in when they crossed from the UK over to south-west France: this is one of the sunniest regions in the land, and it's a cinch from here to get to top destinations around the south of France and on to Spain and Portugal. Ildi and Mark left the UK to set up their own site in France, using the expert knowledge gleaned from many trips away in their motorhome. They picked the peaceful French hamlet of Grosbout as their spot – and jolly sensible too as you'll agree when you spy this rural setting… Old villages and châteaux are dotted around the region, easily reached by foot or bike around the country lanes, and it's all fably safe; the only traffic you'll see is the occasional car or tractor passing by. But. Although this is a serenely rural area, it's within easy reach of pretty much everything you'll need on your French vacance. Supermarkets, food markets, bars, restaurants and shops are all within 10 minutes' drive, as is the N10 main road; the A10 autoroute is half an hour away. (And for les enfants and/or the teens? Futuroscope is an hour away and the city of Angoulême, home to the world-famed Angoulême International Comics Festival, is within 45 minutes.) The guest area of Camping La Forêt de Tessé is next to Ildi and Mark's house, on a level grass field with plentiful trees for shade and with picnic tables for alfresco eats all day. Guests have access to an outdoor pool, sun loungers and parasols for days on site, as well as a pétanque court at which to feel fully French. Camping La Forêt de Tessé has a food shop, and barbecues are allowed.

FHU cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite (large)

Liked: This place was an absolute dream to stay at.My husband & I have just got home from a 10 night stay for our wedding anniversary & it was just beautiful. We had a hardstanding pitch for our caravan ,the grounds were so well kept.
The shower block, toilets, laundry room were close by & they were kept immaculate.
Mark the owner of the camping site was just so helpful, with our first touring trip abroad we forgot a converter cable,he loaned us one for our stay. Then unfortunately we had car trouble, Mark got us a garage sorted, looked for a hire car whilst we couldn't drive ours, then picked us up from the Garage & took my husband back again.
He also drove us around to see a nearby Chateau.
Anyway if you want R&R give this campsite a visit,it's so tranquil.
The flowers were blooming, birds singing & it all adds to the gorgeous surroundings.
Great WiFi available here to.
There is an outside swimming pool at this site to but obviously closed in the colder months.
Also he has Bell tents to hire & a gite that was absolutely stunning
I'd go back here again 100%

Disliked: Nothing to dislike just make sure you recycle & separate your rubbish or the French refuse team won't take it away.

FHU cement/asphalt travel trailer campsite (large)

Liked: The owner greeted us and made us feel welcome. The site is lovely very well maintained. The toilets, shower and washing machine facilities were the best I have seen. Very easy to use and lovely hot water. We stayed one night and felt the better for it and ready for our onward Journey.

Disliked: Not anything to dislike.
I cannot comment on child friendly. I think it would depend on age etc and parents making sure children were safe but only small amount of vans on the sight.

Local attractions

Flip through the Welcome folder on site for info on local events as well as suggestions on what to see and do: there's rather a lot. Top suggestions include the canoeing, summer swimming and kids' beach at Réjallant Ruffec, 15 minutes' drive away; the abbey and Arboretum of Nanteuil-en-Vallée, one of France's 'small towns of character' (20 minutes), or monkeying around at La Vallee des Singes, 35 minutes away. For something a tad different, canoe right down the river to Château de Verteuil, an 11th-century castle overlooking the Charente valley; it's 20 minutes away if you'd rather get there by car. Further afield, Cognac, Chauvigny and the marshlands of the Marais Poitevin are all about an hour and quarter away, and La Rochelle an hour and 40 minutes.
