  • Kid-friendly site in an old quarry at Saint-Leu-d’Esserent in Picardy
  • Parc Astérix half an hour’s drive and Disneyland Paris an hour
  • Leafy setting where firepits are welcome
If you’re looking for somewhere unusual to lay your head in Picardy, Camping Campix on the outskirts of historic Saint-Leu-d’Esserent (five minutes’ drive) is bound to intrigue… For this site has a leafy setting in a disused quarry, abandoned to nature in 1940 and now all but overgrown with trees, bushes and wild shrubs. The secluded grass pitches are all hidden away among the greenery for your privacy, and provide the vibe of wild camping (campfires are allowed), but with all the creature comforts of a modern site – namely, showers with constant hot water, toilets and a snack bar open in July and August. If you decide to do some local exploring, what’s even better is that this seemingly remote spot is in pole position for anyone wanting to spend a day at Parc Astérix (half an hour) and Disneyland Paris (an hour), or in romantic Paris itself (also about an hour).

What customers say

This unique campground provides private, leafy sites with a calm vibe & easy access to Paris via Chantilly. Guests loved the friendly staff & services like bread ordering. While some found unassigned spots spacious, others noted space/access issues for larger vehicles. Pool was under renovation.

Power optional grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Everything!
We were a bit daunted at first when finding a pitch but it was so worth it! Huge, private pitch in lovely surroundings. It really feels like wild camping but with all the benefits of a regular campsite. Good facilities, baguettes and croissants in the morning and lovely staff. We only stayed one night on our way back to Calais but will definitely be back. Loved it!

Power optional grass tent or RV campsite

Liked We loved the fact you could pitch up anywhere felt like we were wild camping.
Owner was friendly on arrival told us about places we could visit nearby

Disliked The swimming was closed due to refurbishment which we didn't realise, that was the main point for us.
Around the club house needs cleaning up maybe an investment of a mower and hedge trimmer. It was all over grown Around the play area and the fort. No real rules for quiet time a few noisy people late at night and early hours.

Power optional grass tent or RV campsite

Liked We had a campfire and bbq, staff sense of humour when you ask for directions to the pool lol she says it’s not finish, I don’t think it’s ever existed the one on the site pics.

Disliked No pool and no sockets at the showers to dry your hair.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Come next year with better glasses to check the sockets we have in both men's and women 's showersrooms and see the nice improvement of we did on our 19 years old pool during your stay.

Power optional grass tent or RV campsite

Liked very interesting site being located in an old quarry, with different areas all being on different levels from each other and lots of private pitches with plenty of space. Helpful , friendly and welcoming staff

Disliked Pool was closed due substantial maintenance / building works. We were not aware of this before booking and may not have picked the site otherwise. There was only one toilet / shower block and we were pitched quite far away

Power optional grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Absolutely nothing

Disliked Absolute nightmare to get too. When we got there the man on was reception was very helpful and friendly. But the pitches are discussing there is no space anywhere and your told to find your own pitch which you have no chance of getting a motorhome. Pool was a pile of rubble. Chef in the restaurant is rude and served everyone French first. We asked for a beer and if your English you have to pay 6 euros a bottle if your French you can get a draught beer. A horrible place avoid like the plague, I will never return. I don’t Normally give negative feedback but this worse probably the worst site I have been too in Europe.

Power optional grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Although this campsite is laissez faire almost to the point of being haphazard (e.g. 'Park where you like'), it had everything we needed. Yes, the toilets amd showers would benefit from being cleaned more often and from hotter water, but there was always soap and toilet paper which many sites don't have. We booked it in order to visit Paris and it didn't disappoint on that front. Approx 8 euro Uber to Chantilly station and a 30 minute train to Paris Nord. Easy!

Local attractions

The site sits north of Paris (about an hour’s drive), so you can have a day to explore the City of Lights, board a bateau-mouche cruise down the River Seine, visit art masterpieces in The Louvre and dine in Montmartre bistros. Another bucket-list attraction about the same distance away is the Palace of Versailles, where you can tour opulent apartments and wander the formal water gardens. Another grand palace is open for tours at sublime Chantilly (15 minutes), which also has an equine museum and stellar art collection; close by is the exceptional Gothic architecture of soaring Cathédrale Notre-Dame in Senlis (25 minutes). If that all sounds a bit too much like culture, the kids will probably prefer day trips to the rollercoasters and water rides at Gaul-themed Parc Astérix (half an hour). For your full compliment of amusement parks, head for the parades, musical shows and simulator rides at Disneyland Paris (an hour). To make things easy for you, tickets for both world-renowned parks are available to buy at reception on site.
