  • Well-equipped family caravans in Saint-Jean-de-Monts
  • A 10-minute drive to Explora Parc; an hour and 20 mins to Puy du Fou
  • Aquapark and wellness area on site; access to sister site's activities
Well-equipped caravans, lots of activities and a beach just down the road… it’s all rather well set up for a family holiday at Chez Sophie au Camping Le Bois Masson, on the edge of Saint-Jean-de-Monts and about five minutes’ drive from the resort’s centre, beach and attractions. This seaside town is well known for its splendid sandy beach and its excellent list of activities, including watersports, horse riding, fishing, miniature golf and the heavenly waters of Thermes Marins thalassotherapy centre. There are bike paths galore too, and great swathes of forest and sand dune to explore – plus plenty of places to eat out in town. And there’s much activity on site too: for starters, this site has its own aqua park (with indoor and outdoor heated pools, a paddling pool and several slides) and runs entertainment through high season. And, for the frazzled grownups among you, there’s also the chance to take some proper chillout time at the wellness area, which has a sauna, a hammam, a Jacuzzi and various treatments. If that little lot isn’t quite enough to keep you occupied, you’ll be pleased to hear there’s yet more on offer at a sister site, which you’ll have access to during your stay (some at an extra charge). And that means more swimming pools, more entertainment, three kids’ clubs, play areas, a tennis court, fitness classes including aquagym, a video games room, a fitness room… and rather handily also a pizzeria, restaurant and creperie/ice cream parlour to keep you well fed.

Liked st jean de Monts and the surrounding area, in the caravan, washing machine, aircon and everything you would need

Disliked On arrival, we were told at the caravan door: €780 deposit or no key. Apparently, it’s in the terms and conditions—but at 62, having never paid a holiday rental deposit before, I didn’t think to check. I felt completely taken advantage of. It cast a cloud over the whole trip, worrying if money would be taken for no reason with nothing I could do about it.

To make matters worse, you can’t use any facilities without paying €19 per day—no pool, no club, nothing. For our 6-night stay, they offered a “pass” for €180. In all my years of travelling, I’ve never had to pay extra just to use an on-site swimming pool.

From the manager: Dear Sir,
The deposit is mandatory and regardless of age, as stated in the contract, and like all rental cars, materials, etc., why would money be taken from the deposit? No breakages, cleaning done, everything is fine.

Regarding the facilities (swimming pools, entertainment, etc.), it's also noted in the ad. I offered you the badges so you could benefit from the 20% discount. You replied that you would check on site.

The badges only allow campsite guests to enjoy the entire property, not outsiders, as is the case with many campsites.

Azalée 2 bedroom mobile home (semi-sheltered balcony)

Liked Location is great, good size mobile home for 4 people, nice terrace, all the kitchenware we needed, the sites bars were nice.

Disliked We were disappointed to have to pay to use the pool etc on top of the mobile home hire, we were told it was clearly marked on the advert but I disagree.
We had to follow a link to give card details for a deposit which I didn’t like.
A man came to the mobile home to collect and drop off the keys, this was inconvenient to have to arrange as we were driving a long way.

Regarding the pass, it's clearly noted in the listing description. I offered to purchase them through me in order to take advantage of the discount, which you declined.

Like all rentals, there's a deposit, the same applies if you rent a car, which is normal.

The man in question is my concierge, who handles check-ins and check-outs. I don't see what was inconvenient since you chose your own departure time.

However, he informed me that the cleaning wasn't up to scratch when you left; he had to redo some things that I didn't charge you for.

Local attractions

Saint-Jean-de-Monts is pretty packed with things to do, so the best thing to do is hire a bike on site and pedal your way around town, picking out the activities that intrigue you the most – perhaps sailing, fishing, miniature golf, riding horses through the surf or climbing the trees at Explora Parc? (Simply relaxing on the beach is also an option of course…) Once you’ve got those bikes, you could take them off to the many trails around the island of Noirmoutier (25 minutes’ drive) or board a boat from La Barre-de-Monts (20 minutes) to Île de Yeu for more splendid cycle paths. Elsewhere along the coast, you could try out other seaside resorts like Saint Gilles Croix de Vie (15 minutes) and Sables d’Olonne (45 minutes), which also has a fine zoo to visit. If you don’t mind a slightly longer drive, inland options include visits to Nantes (an hour and 10 minutes) or an action-packed day at the Puy du Fou theme park (an hour and 20 minutes).
