What a very fine Vendée location has Camping Les Gatinelles – settle in here and you could easily give the car a bit of a holiday as well as your good selves. Stays here are on two hectares of shaded parkland in Brétignolles-sur-Mer, a mere few minutes’ gentle stroll from the town centre and enough shops, restaurants, bakeries and crêperies to keep you well fed for many a day. Essentials all sorted, it’s time to turn attentions to the fun stuff. And plenty of that there is in the surrounds – a sandy beach and coastal cycle paths are just over a kilometre away, and you'll also be within easy reach of horse riding, canoeing, a miniature golf course, salt marsh walks and waterparks (although you may sometimes need to briefly wake the car from its slumbers for some of these). Even more convenient is the option of staying around on site, where activities galore are run by trained pros throughout July and August and you can make new pals at the mini farm (home to pigs, a goat, a sheep and hens). A playground, trampoline, and games room are also on site. If it’s quieter times you seek, settle in with something from the stash of books and board games.

Liked Pitches were a good size and very quiet. Toilets and showers cleaned regularly and close to the pitches. Location was very handy for the supermarket.

Disliked Slightly further away from the beach than advertised, however worth it when you got there. Long sandy beaches with bars, restaurants and shops.

Liked Close to town centre with good sized pitches for our VW campervan. The staff are friendly and helpful on reception and the shower block is clean. The water wasn’t always that warm in the showers, but it was okay as it was so hot when we were there.

Liked Lovely friendly staff. Excellent toilet/shower facilites. Great location being in centre of town but very quiet - 2 mins walk to shops/supermarket and bars/restaurants. 15 mins walk to beaches or quicker if cycling or car. Pitch size was great with free electricity and good price for pitch.

Disliked Nothing. Will be going back in August.

Local attractions

Start your stay with a good dose of sea air: Parée beach, 15 minutes’ walk away, is a wide sandy stretch that’s also got some good rocks to perch on for a spot of fishing. Wide paths along the coastline are fab for walks, bike rides and rollerblading. Kitesurfing, paddleboarding and sea kayaking are a 10-minute bike ride away, or you can saddle up to splash through the surf on horseback 15 minutes away. Turning your sights slightly inland, there are more walks to be had among the scenic salt marshes around Brem-sur-Mer (five minutes' drive). If the small sorts aren’t so enthused by scenery, steer them to the town's Parc des Dunes for assorted amusements including toboggans, pedal karts and giant inflatables. Filling family days is fairly easy around here: you may also like to put on your to-visit list the cute model village Vendée Miniature (five minutes' drive), treetop trails at Le Grand Défi (15 minutes), screaming down the waterslides at Atlantic Toboggan (25 minutes) and animal encounters at Sables d’Olonne Zoo (also 25 minutes).
