  • Pitches on an educational farm in Loire-Anjou-Touraine Natural Park
  • Half an hour’s walk from wineries; 20 minutes’ drive from Saumur
  • Wildflower area and animals on site; breakfast for an additional fee
Fill your mind with the sights and sounds of nature at Brain de Nature – this Maine-et-Loire site is set on an educational farm where your neighbours will be sheep, goats and horses and the sunrises and sunsets have a tendency to be rather fabulous. Everything here is designed to promote the joys of nature and preserve it – pitches have access to eco-friendly facilities including a solar shower and compost toilet made from recycled materials, and there’s a lovely wildflower meadow where guests can take a wander and pick flowers to make bouquets. As a farm site, you’ll be out in a rural location, but not far from the village of Allonnes, which is five minutes’ drive away for a supermarket, bakery, butcher, bank and places to eat. There’s also a good market in Bourgueil (10 minutes' drive) on a Tuesday morning, and another in Saumur (20 minutes) on a Saturday. For an additional fee, the site owners can also deliver you breakfast (7am-10am), which includes an artisanal pastry and bread, butter and jam, along with local honey and coffee, tea or hot chocolate. This rural location puts you in pole position for outdoor activities such as cycling, horse riding, walking or visiting local wineries for tastings. The closest wineries are in Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil, just over half an hour’s walk away, and there are plenty more in Saumur. Meanwhile, Les Cimes de Courcy, five minutes’ drive away, is nice for a quick family outing, with a forest play area and dining venues.

Power optional grass and earth campsite

Liked: What a great place to stay. David’s farm was completely charming - our neighbours were goats, pony’s and a beautiful (and chatty) pig called Maggie.
This is a peaceful place surrounded by vineyards and run by David and his very friendly family.
We were made to feel very welcome and were introduced to the local vineyards and area. Highly recommended

Disliked: Nothing at all

Local attractions

Saumur (20 minutes’ drive) simply has to be on the schedule when you’re staying here – this town on the banks of the Loire river is a lovely place to wander around, with a spectacular château and lots of medieval buildings to see. You may also like to take a wine-tasting tour of the town, see the tanks and armoured vehicles at Musée des Blindés and watch a show or take a tour at the Cadre Noir riding school. The Loire Valley is of course littered with lovely historic buildings, so you may also like to stop by at villages like Candes-Saint-Martin and Montsoreau (15 minutes), visit the Abbaye Royale de Fontevraud (20 minutes) or explore the gorgeous Château d’Ussé (half an hour), whose classic turrets were said to be the inspiration for Sleeping Beauty’s castle. For family days out, clamber up into the trees at Saumur Forest Aventures (20 minutes), or set off to Bioparc de Doué-la-Fontaine (35 minutes) to see animals from around the world in natural-style habitats within an old quarry.
