  • Set over 11 hectares in manicured grounds of a 19th-century château
  • A 35-minute drive from the Calais and Dunkirk channel crossings
  • Two pools, outdoor gym, pizza bar and cosy bar and restaurant
Peaceful, green and spectacularly scenic... Camping Château du Gandspette is a quiet countryside site set among the grounds of a 19th-century château, across 11 hectares of bloom-filled wooded parkland in the Caps et Marais d'Opale Natural Regional Park. The Calais and Dunkirk channel crossings are 35 minutes' drive away. This park’s pleasant woodland setting makes for a pristinely peaceful stay: the site has spacious and landscaped pitches surrounded by mature trees, loads of green space and lots of blooms and hedges. Leisurewise, there are two outdoor pools (one heated), ping pong tables and tennis courts, as well as a multisports area and an outdoor gym; activities run in high season too. Food is well sorted at the site’s well-appointed summer bar and restaurant, serving grilled meats and regional specialities such as Flemish carbonnade and potjevleesch, and at the snack bar for pizza and fries to eat in or take away. The bar and its viewsome terrace is where you can sink a drink or two (while watching major sports fixtures, if that’s your leisurely bent). And if the scenery isn’t enough to rouse you from your slumber? Freshly baked bread is on sale every summer morn.

Power optional cement/asphalt RV campsite

Liked: Pitches very large, well maintained, lovely grounds toilet & shower facilities large, modern and kept clean, nice wooded area for dog walking lovely pool areas quiet at night. 30 min walk to the local supermarket or a few mins by car Poor Wifi signal on some areas though but not warranted as a dislike because they are aware of it, nice bar with open fire , restaurant food ok if you like chips with everything maybe different sides would help but again not a dislike.

Power optional grass campsite

Liked: Site was easily accessible and I'm sure the pool will be well used at peak times. It looked lovely and clean. Pitch allocated on arrival and very spacious.

Excellent bar and restaurant on site good food and value for money.

Reception staff helped book our dog in at the vets prior to our arrival in order to meet the shuttle requirements as it was a public holiday.

Disliked: The toilets were all external to the main shower block.Whilst very clean was quite drafty.

The ladies and family showers, again were well cleaned, but the water not very hot..

Power optional cement/asphalt RV campsite

Liked: Plenty of space and large restaurant. Great for children to run around.

Disliked: Food was just ok in restaurant but not great. Thought it very expensive to stay as a stopover to Le Shuttle when there are quite a number of other sites to stay within the area at half the price, but booked based on a recommendation! Arrived late PM and weather not great so no facilities used. No water facility on pitch, you had to go fetch it from other parts of site and Wifi was an additional cost.

Local attractions

The region is well served by road, rail and sea connections, including services such as the Eurostar and several from major Channel maritime operators. Camping Château du Gandspette is 45 minutes’ drive from the Calais-Fréthun high-speed rail international station too, making one-hour journeys to London, 30-minute journeys to Lille and two-hour journeys to Brussels and Paris a cinch. The site’s Caps et Marais d'Opale Natural Regional Park setting is tiptop for hikes and bike rides around the area, with the GR 128 hiking trail (between Wissant in France and Gand in Belgium) within easy reach. Horse riding, fishing and golf are available in Ruminghem and St Omer, and for kid-friendly days out, bowling, go-karting and theme parks such as Dennlys Parc at Dennebroeucq and Plopsaland de Panne in Belgium are all within an hour’s drive. History buffs can take a trip to the Eperlecques Blockhouse, a kilometre from base, and the La Coupole bunker complex (aka the St Omer Dome) is less than 20 minutes’ drive away. Other war memorial sites and points of interest well worth a trip to include the Fortress of Mimoyecques, the 1939-1945 Museum at Ambleteuse, the Memorial Museum at Calais, the Atlantic Wall Museum in Audinghen and the Memorial Museum at Dunkirk.
