  • Pyrénées Ariégeoises site within 45 minutes of Andorra
  • Within walking distance of the spa town of Ax-les-Thermes
  • Heated seasonal swimming pool and a wine cellar/restaurant
Just Pyrenees perfection… Holidaymakers of all tastes will be fully tended to at the peaceful, friendly and excellently set site of Camping Le Malazéou, 700 metres above sea level in the Ariège department, and with activities and sightseeing to keep you occupied for months within day-trip distance. For example. You can stroll or pedal straight from the site along a scenic riverside path to reach the nearby town of Ax-les-Thermes, worth an amble in itself but also a spot where you can hail a cable car to the Ax 3 Domaines ski resort, tackle the Stage 14 route of the 2010 Tour de France, or sink into 60 or so thermal springs. But! There's a mighty amount on this six-hectare site too – which could be mighty handy if you've exhausted your adventurous self skiing, cycling, hiking or sightseeing. If you've still got energy left, head to the heated outdoor pool (open in the summer months). The site also has a snack bar with terrace for eats, drinks, concerts and shows, and hosts regular quiz nights and tournaments.

What customers say

Highly recommended riverside campsite. Guests loved the clean facilities, spacious pitches, friendly staff, and uncrowded pool. Bar/food prices were steep for some, and entertainment noise occurred occasionally. Great for Ax access, biking/walking, and good WiFi.

Liked Really friendly and helpful staff. Good facilities that were clean. Some of the toilet blocks were more UK standard eg. Had toilet seats, however the newest toilet block did not have a sink with soap unless you went to the wash up area.
Really good bar and restaurant. Great steaks, fish and burgers.
Campsite pool was clean and not too busy.
Launderette was excellent. €7 to do a wash may seem expensive but the machines were a 12kg capacity. Good supermarket 10min walk and the walk into Ax was great from the rear exit of the campsite, took about 15mins.
Plenty to do; walking, cycling etc. Cable car went to another resort half way, nice for lunch.
WiFi good too.
Highly recommend.

Local attractions

Orlu, seven kilometres away, is home to the fab House of Wolves animal park, as well as active adventures paintballing, canyoning and trying out the routes of the local treetop adventure park. The town's also the starting point of the Orlu National Reserve, where you should be able to spot the likes of marmots, bearded vultures and golden eagles among these high mountains. Several marked walking trails are around the reserve; pick up info at its office back in Ax-les-Thermes. For fab buildings as well as fab scenery, drive 25 minutes to Château de Lordat, one of the biggest and oldest feudal castles of the County of Foix. And for another castle, the famed Château de Foix – the main structure of the Cathar lot – is set scenically above Foix town about 50 minutes away. This part of south-west France is also famed for its vast caves and their prehistoric art: Lombrives cave, the biggest in Europe, is 25 minutes away for cavernous tours, and the Palaeolithic paintings of Niaux are within half an hour, just south of Foix.
