  • Modern wooden chalets 15 minutes’ drive from Argentat-sur-Dordogne
  • Lac de Feyt 10 minutes’ drive; Salers medieval village 50 minutes
  • Lovely views from a hilltop location; dogs welcome on site
Grab your children and your dog, pack up your canoe and hiking boots and head to Les Chalets de La Vialette, your base for an active holiday in the Corrèze department of central France. This location, about 15 minutes’ drive from Argentat-sur-Dordogne, is an excellent one for all sorts of outdoor activities including horse riding, climbing and watersports on local lakes or the mighty Dordogne river, which is a little over a kilometre away. Closer to home, the oak trees all around may well entice you out for a woodland walk (with a dog by your side if you’ve brought the family pet along on your holiday). These smart chalets sit on the side of a forested hill to the south of the Dordogne river, and the elevated position provides some pretty spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. To help guests make the most of the views, each of the chalets has a covered terrace for alfresco dining, drinks or just chilling out quietly. Argentat-sur-Dordogne has supermarkets and small shops where you can pick up what you need for your meals (and it also has several restaurants if you’d rather eat out). As well as that lovely terrace, each chalet has a well-equipped kitchen (with hob, fridge, kettle and toaster), a shower room, a TV and heating to keep you nice and cosy.

Local attractions

The Dordogne river is well known as a canoeing spot, so bring your vessels along for a good paddle, or hire them from Argentat-sur-Dordogne (15 minutes’ drive). For other water-based activities, head to Lac de Feyt (10 minutes) for a lake beach and paddleboard hire, or to Lac d’Auriac (25 minutes) for an inflatable assault course. Walking is a great option in these lovely surroundings too, of course – perhaps a riverside stroll, a wander around the ruined fortress of Tours de Merle (half an hour) or an uphill hike to Le Roc du Busatier (35 minutes) for gorgeous river views. Via Ferrata Dordogne (25 minutes) is a well-maintained climbing trail overlooking the river, and Charmant Moulin (20 minutes) is a good local option for horse riding. To explore more of the area’s history, step into medieval rural life at the Farms of the Middle Ages Xaintrie open-air museum (20 minutes), or stroll around Salers (50 minutes), a member of the Most Beautiful Villages in France with lots of attractive buildings and top-notch local food to try out.
