  • Family site a five-minute drive from the beach of Argelès-sur-Mer
  • Collioure 15 minutes’ drive; Banyuls-sur-Mer 20 minutes
  • Swimming pool with waterslide; hot tub; restaurant and food shop
What makes a spectacular location? For some it might be proximity to the sea; for others, views of forested mountains as far as the eye can see. Camping de Pujol combines both in a splendid package in the Pyrénées-Orientales department of south-western France. It sits a five-minute drive from Argelès-sur-Mer’s sandy Plage Central, and it’s overlooked by the wooded Albera Massif, part of the Pyrenees. And just across the mountains is Catalonia, so if you want to, you can tick both France and Spain off your list… Pujol has a strong family-friendly vibe (with a playground, kids’ and teens’ clubs, and a waterslide in the pool), but couples looking for a romantic break should also consider it, because any organised activities and entertainment take place in specifically designated areas. The pitches are peaceful and shaded by the tall trees, and suitable for post-lunch naps or quiet afternoons spent reading or daydreaming. Besides the pool, the site has an outdoor hot tub and a pétanque court, plus it’s possible to hire a bicycle and explore the gorgeous coastline on two wheels. There is also a shop selling local produce and wines (you’re in Languedoc-Roussillon, after all…), a launderette and drying room, and a toilet/shower block with facilities for guests with reduced mobility. For dinner, there’s a restaurant on site, plus more options (from pizza to seafood) either in town or on the seafront and at the harbour.

Local attractions

Collioure (15 minutes’ drive) has a pretty natural harbour overlooked by a medieval castle. Walk along the ramparts for views of the sea and of Notre-Dame-des-Anges, a stone church that started its life as a lighthouse. After strolling along cobbled streets lined with colourful houses, go for a hike along the coastal trail linking Collioure to Argelès. Sitting within a deep, sheltered cove, the pebbly beach at Banyuls-sur-Mer (20 minutes) is lined by a shaded promenade. Walk to the tip of the harbour wall for views of the town, then check out the underwater creatures at the Biodiversarium. On the outskirts of town, the Museé Maillol displays sculptures by Aristide Maillol in the country house where he lived. On the slopes of the Pyrenees, Céret (half an hour) is a pleasant small town with tree-shaded squares, a car-free centre and a relaxed vibe. Its main attraction is the Musée d’Art Moderne, with works by heavy hitters such as Chagall, Miró and Picasso.
