  • Peaceful 10-hectare site on the banks of the Seine in Les Andelys
  • A 25-minute drive from Monet's garden at Giverny and 50 from Rouen
  • Pool, playground, fishing lake, bike hire and bar-restaurant
Well, if it's good enough for three kings, that sounds like a fine start, non? If any royals did indeed happen upon Camping L'Île des Trois Rois they’d surely find the location most pleasing, for this 10-hectare site is in a stunning spot on the banks of the Seine river and a leisurely 10-minute stroll from the shops and restaurants of Les Andelys (eats an easy walk away being a real bonus if you’re wearing velvet robes… or taking the small sorts out for a crêpe). The good life awaits for all guests here, princely background or not – days on site can be spent fishing/daydreaming by the river or fishing lake, swimming in the heated pool, perfecting your pétanque pitch or playing games of badminton and table tennis. Pint-sized princes and princesses have been given their own castle to play in – a giant inflatable one whose estate includes a decent amount of playground kit too. In summer, you can source eats and drinks on site at the bar-restaurant, then stick around to strut your stuff at one of the dance evenings. For other foodie demands, you may like to hire a bike on site to pedal up to town; you can also use it for bit of riverside roaming along the scenic cycle path that skirts the side of the Seine.

Powered grass campsite (comfort)

Liked: The facilities and layout of the site.
Nice location and friendly staff.
Swimming pool was great.
Play equipment was perfect for children and very much enjoyed.
Showers were hot (be careful with young children)
Facilities were clean.
Site was quiet at a suitable time in the evening.

Disliked: Grass pitch was not cut and was very bumpy.
Wash basins by toilet block couldn’t be reached by our 5 year old. No lower basins in shower block for children.
Wi-Fi is expensive - make sure you have data!

(Had email before our stay from Flower Camping encouraging us to download the app, but the app was 2 years out of date, advertising booking for 2023! Also didn’t give any specific info about the site - most links just gave the phone number and email address. The app said that the restaurant welcomes you from 11am, but it wasn’t even open during our stay, apart from possibly the last day. Didn’t mention season dates.)

Powered grass campsite (comfort)

Liked: Close to town, childrens play area and a covered swiming pool, clean toilets and facilities well laid out site and the option of chalets.
Pleasant staff.
Visited at end of season.

Disliked: Being a winter site it would have been nice if they had cut the grass on the touring pitches, Long wet grass is not nice. Hot water tepid in toilet blocks. Hopefully be better in the high season.

Local attractions

If in any doubt about the top local attraction, look up: Château Gaillard towers over the place from 90 metres up, as it has since the late 12th century. It's all in ruins now, but very much worth the hike up for some splendid views over the Seine. There are several more handsome historic buildings around town if you fancy taking a tour, and the World War II-themed Musée De Tosny is a five-minute drive away on the other side of the river. History’s seen a long list of famed names come this way for artistic inspiration – if you're in need of a little of that, plot a course for Lyons-la-Forêt (25 minutes' drive), a pretty little village that’s provided fodder for Renoir’s paintings and Ravel’s music. Anyone who’s ever admired Monet’s paintings of water lilies won’t want to miss a trip to Giverny (25 minutes) to see the gorgeous gardens in real life. Vernon (20 minutes) and Rouen (50 minutes) are also worth a trip for those that can't get enough of the history of the hereabouts. Should the nippers be tiring of such outings, venture to Val-de-Reuil (half an hour) for a zoo, an indoor play park and a lake with beach and watersports centre.
