It's free, quick and easy!
- Family-friendly site by the river in Romorantin-Lanthenay
- Half an hour's drive from the Loire Valley châteaux
- Covered swimming pool, bike hire and games room on site
A riverside retreat in rather lovely Romorantin-Lanthenay – that’s Camping Tournefeuille, a quiet family-friendly site on the banks of the Sauldre river in the pretty Loir-et-Cher town.
This is a nifty location that’s both peaceful and also mighty convenient – the town’s many shops, restaurants and museums are a mere 10-minute trot away, and you’re well placed for outdoorsy times in the Sologne area (fishing, cycling and hikes are all popular activities in the surrounds) or trips over to the Loire Valley and its many (many, many) gorgeous châteaux.
The river’s not really suited to swims, but cooling dips and splashes can be had at the site’s own swimming pool, which has a retractable cover to cope with whatever the weather has in store. A playground, free wifi and high-season bread delivery service are among the other facilities.
Once you’ve picked up supplies at the town’s market (which handily runs three days a week), you’re welcome to cook on a barbecue here; they’ll even loan you one if you’ve not got space to bring your own. There are bikes for hire too if you’re going out exploring, and board games, a TV room and a games room if you’re more in the mood for flopping.

Local attractions
Take a 10-minute ramble up to the centre of Romorantin-Lanthenay to follow the town’s history trail around ancient bridges and mills, roam through riverside gardens and see the cracking classic car collection at the Matra Auto Museum.
A château visit or few is a must when loafing around the Loire Valley, and Tournefeuille’s within easy reach of several of the area’s finest specimens, including lavish Château de Valençay (half an hour’s drive), classical Château de Cheverny (half an hour), huge 400-roomed Château de Chambord (40 minutes) and renaissance Château de Blois (45 minutes).
If all the opulence has left you a little overwhelmed, take a nature break for canoe or kayak trips from Noyers-sur-Cher (half an hour away) or to visit the wild beasts at ZooParc de Beauval (40 minutes). When you’ve recovered a bit, there are more fine medieval and renaissance buildings to gawp at an hour away in Tours.
