It's free, quick and easy!
- Well-equipped luxury lodges in leafy gardens at Lunay in Loir-et-Cher
- Château de Chambord an hour’s drive and Zoo de la Flèche 90 minutes
- Art spaces and meditation corners; communal dining and a delicatessen
Who would believe that Écoute la Vie was only an hour by train from Paris? This leafy Loir-et-Cher haven is a couple of minutes’ drive away from sleepy Lunay village and a world away from city bustle. The accommodation is set amid an abundance of flowers, trees and fruit orchards in colourfully landscaped gardens humming with the sound of birdsong and utterly spectacular at any time of year.
Each lodge has open-plan living space, ensuite shower rooms and well-equipped kitchen corners. The outdoor space comprises partially covered decking with picnic tables and seating for alfresco feasting, or alternatively you might prefer to cook in the shared kitchen and eat at the communal dining table – stocking up on local wines and (largely) organic produce from the delicatessen as you go.
In quieter moments, spend time flower arranging, drawing or storytelling in the library chalet, or meditate in a hidden corner of the garden – but if you really feel the need to let rip, hotfoot it to the spacious yurt to dance, sing, laugh and celebrate being surrounded by nature.
Kids get to bounce around in the sandpit or on the trampoline, and you can all keep an eye out for rare butterflies, dragonflies, frogs and hares as you explore the gardens together.

Local attractions
Go hiking and cycling straight from your lodge, or trundle through Loir-et-Cher woodland on the tourist train from Gare de Thoré-la-Rochette (10 minutes’ drive). For a different perspective on the region, see the countryside from above on a hot-air balloon ride (40 minutes).
Kids can grab the chance to spy on comical pandas and penguins at ZooParc de Beauval, or spot endangered big cats at Zoo de la Flèche (both about 90 minutes). Horse-mad teens will love the themed dressage shows at Les Ecuries de La Perchais (an hour), and if anyone needs to run off surplus energy, the obstacle courses and rope climbs at Gadawi Park Adventure (an hour) should do the trick nicely.
Once the children have had their fun, it’s time to check out a triumvirate of gorgeous châteaux. Begin your exploration at the 15th-century Manoir de la Possonnière (20 minutes), once home to Renaissance poet Pierre de Ronsard. Tour formal gardens and exquisite apartments at moated Château de Chambord (an hour), and admire the richly gilded decor at Château Royal de Blois (50 minutes).
