Pitches between the trees

  • On the outskirts of Bourges, 20 minutes' walk from the historic centre
  • Sailing, fishing, golf and horse riding within a 20-minute walk
  • Small grocery store, a playground and sports kit on site
Fancy abandoning your wheels for a bit and striding out under your own steam? Set up for a stay at Camping de Bourges and you’ll be within easy ambling (or cycling) distance of heaps of attractions and useful amenities. From this green and tree-filled spot in suburban Bourges it’s a gentle 20-minute stroll to the handsome historic city centre, or the leisure facilities around the Val d’Auron lake (tennis, golf, horse riding, sailing and fishing among them). Heaps of restaurants, cafés, shops, markets and a supermarket are within striking distance, too. All of this is most excellently handy of course, but you’ll most likely not want to be roaming too far in the early hours, so it’s highly recommended that you take advantage of the site’s delivery service to provide fresh bread and pastries for your morning munching. Other snacks, drinks and bits and bobs to supplement your baked goods can be acquired at the small on-site grocery store. Badminton, volleyball and pétanque kit is all available for those who choose to lurk about on site for a while, along with a playground for the nippers.

Local attractions

There’s much to see in central Bourges, including a gorgeous Gothic cathedral (UNESCO listed and bearing a passing resemblance to Paris’s Notre-Dame in places) and more than 400 half-timbered houses. If you’re here in summer it’s well worth taking a wander after dusk when clever lighting creates interesting effects on several buildings. Head south for 20 minutes or so on foot (or five minutes pedalling your bike) to get to Val d’Auron lake for days spent sailing, rowing or fishing on the lake, or playing waterside games of golf or tennis. There’s also a riding centre down here for pony rides and riding lessons. Those fond of a tipple or two will do well out of a day spent in and around Sancerre, a 45-minute drive from the site, pottering around the vineyards, sampling the famed crisp whites and nibbling on the local Crottin de Chavignol goats’ cheese.
