  • Peaceful rural site 10 minutes' drive from Le Molay-Littry
  • Less than an hour from ferry ports at Cherbourg and Caen
  • Bar-restaurant overlooking the heated outdoor pool
Seeking somewhere for a first night after the ferry to Cherbourg or Caen? Friendly Tournières site Camping Le Picard certainly fits that bill – less than an hour’s drive from either port (on easy-to-negotiate main roads to help nervous wrong-side-of-the-road drivers acclimatise) and you can be taking a dip in the heated pool or sipping a beer at the bar while plotting your next move. Mind you, perhaps your next move should be… well, not to move at all. This is a mighty fine destination in its own right, with more than enough to keep guests amused for many a day – Bayeux and the D-Day landing beaches are both around 20 minutes’ drive away, and you can get to UNESCO-listed Mont Saint-Michel in just over an hour. Beaches and animal parks are close by for the small sorts, as are cider and Calvados producers for thirsty grownups. And if you really, really don’t want to move at all, there’s that outdoor pool to play about in/recline next to, a fishing pond for quiet rod-dangling days and games of pétanque and table tennis to provide gentle activity. Come along in summer and you’ll not even need to stir yourself for eats and drinks, as the poolside bar-restaurant can supply you with drinks, snacks, kid-friendly meals and home-cooked dinners. (At other times, you’re looking at a barely-arduous 10-minute trip to Le Molay-Littry for supplies, followed by lighting up your barbie if you so desire.)

Liked: It was very close to all the Normandy sites we wanted to see. The owner was very friendly, it was quiet with beautiful sun rises and sun sets. The facilities are functional- basic but clean.

Disliked: Using the facilities at night was a little challenging due to limited lighting- I did you a torch but it was still very dark.

From the manager: Dear Madam, Dear Sir,

Thank you very much for taking the time to share your experience with us. We are delighted to hear that our location allowed you to discover the sites of Normandy and that you enjoyed the beautiful sunrises and sunsets.

We apologise for the inconvenience caused by the lack of lighting at night on the campsite. We have made the choice of a minimised lighting at night as one of our ecological actions. We have therefore been using solar lamps since the start of the year, supplemented by electric lighting (from 7.30pm to 2am and from 5am to 7.30am), but this does not seem sufficient in the low season when the days are shorter. We take your comments very seriously and will be looking at ways to improve the lighting to make it easier for our guests to get around in the future while maintaining our green actions.

We look forward to welcoming you back during your next stay in Normandy.

Best regards.

Liked: We had pitch number 1 near the toilets as requested which was most welcome. The pitches are flat.
Delphine and Laurent were very friendly and welcoming, the site was kept clean and is well maintained.
The pool is heated and was very nice. Bread and wine available in the shop at a very reasonable price.
Good location to visit Bayeux and the D day beaches and museums.

Disliked: The weather, but it is what it is.

Local attractions

Beach days around these parts have rather more significance than in many areas, as the nearest stretch of coastline is that of the D-Day Beaches. The beaches up here aren’t stuck in the past, though: memorials and museums rub alongside family-friendly stretches of sand. For the best mix of history and seaside fun, head to Saint-Laurent-sur-Mer (site of Omaha Beach) or Arromanches-les-Bains. History buffs will no doubt also want to spend at least a day in Bayeux, 20 minutes’ drive away. The ancient 68-metre Bayeux Tapestry draws in huge crowds, but it’s not the town’s only attraction: plan to spend some time visiting the Baron Gérard art museum and the Battle of Normandy, and wandering around the medieval centre. A little further afield (around an hour’s drive) are Mont Saint-Michel and Cherbourg's excellent Cité de la Mer maritime museum and aquarium.
