What an excellent setting has Camping de Tauves: right in the middle of France's Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes volcanic region, it’s surrounded by woodland, open fields and the region's famed volcanic hot springs. It's 700 metres from the nearest village, Tauves, from the site, in a land of farmers' markets, volcanic hot springs and scenic settlements such as Orcival, La Bourboule, Murol and Clermont-Ferrand. Mountain biking, hiking, cycling, horse riding, skiing and snowboarding are all popular local pursuits, as well as canoeing and fishing if you’re after something water-based. When you’re all tuckered out after doing some or all of the above – or if you simply fancy a good and proper pampering – nearby La Bourboule also has an excellent aqua centre where you can take a dip among its Turkish baths and settle back for one of many relaxing spa treatments; if you’re taking tiddlers, then it’s also a smashing spot for a swim and an afternoon picnic. Back at base, more water-based time can be had around the outdoor pool; out of the water, a pétanque court is on hand for laid-back bouts of family competition, and there's a playground for kids to bound about at. For supplies of food and other sorts off site, a convenience store lies a short way down the road at Tauves.

Liked They recycle there. Nice swimming pool. Within easy reach of the town. Our pitch was nicely defined by a Leylandii hedge.

Disliked Squat toilet ratio to ordinary. If you are arthritic like me it is an issue!

Liked La facilité d’accès en plein village et l’accueil sympathique et rapide. Comme nous étions avec des amis nous nous sommes posés comme nous voulions avec deux emplacements sans gêner les autres campeurs ! La piscine un peu fraîche … et les installations propres !

Pampering treatments among the swish hot spring spas in La Bourboule should be one of the first holiday boxes you set out to tick around here. If you’re with littlies who mightn’t yet appreciate the finer things in life, then swirls on carousels and testing miniature-golf skills over at the town’s Parc Fenestre might be a better option instead – as might whisking them off to the volcano-themed interactive exhibitions, games and activities of Vulcania amusement park, 40 minutes away. To delve into French history and culture, have a wander around historic settlements like Orcival, La Bourboule and Clermont-Ferrand to see churches, basilicas and museums, or head to Murol for its wooded park and museum of impressionist art. If you’re also an active sort, combine this last with a visit to Chambon lake for swimming, canoeing and pedal boating, and top it all off with local cuisine at one of several lakeside restaurants. Highly scenic landscapes to walk and cycle among are around too, including routes up to the peaks of Puy de Sancy and Mont-Dore, both within an hour. In winter, skiers can make for the slopes of Super Besse ski station, just over half an hour’s drive away.
