  • Modern static caravans a 10-minute drive from Saint-Jean-de-Luz
  • Biarritz and Bayonne half an hour’s drive; Rhune mountain 50 minutes
  • Two swimming pools; wellness area; restaurant; entertainment programme
France or Spain? You could settle this dilemma by flipping a coin – or you could head to the Basque Country and holiday on the border between the two. The phrase ‘the best of both worlds’ springs to mind at Ze Camping at Camping Suhiberry, in the south-westernmost corner of France, a 10-minute drive from the coastal resort of Saint-Jean-de-Luz and a 20-minute drive from the Spanish border. With panoramic views of the Rhune mountain (50 minutes’ drive), in the Pyrenees, Camping Suhiberry is a gateway to some pretty spectacular hiking trails, though some might prefer to stay closer to the site and relax on sandy beaches like Plage de Ciboure and Plage de Socoa (five minutes). Then, there will be those who choose to hardly ever leave the site, which has plenty of attractions, starting with a heated pool for the grown-ups and a toddlers’ pool with a waterslide; a wellness area with a hot tub and sauna (plus massages); sports courts (from tennis to Basque pelota and pétanque); and two play areas. Accommodation is in light-filled, modern static caravans with a well-equipped kitchen (gotta love that dishwasher), a comfortable living area and a covered terrace for outdoor dining. The shop sells local produce that you can incorporate in your dishes, or you might prefer to eat at the on-site restaurant or sample regional seafood dishes in Saint-Jean-de-Luz. Be sure to be back at the site for the evening entertainment, though, which could be live music or traditional Basque dancing.

Local attractions

Saint-Jean-de-Luz sits on a vast sheltered bay with sandy beaches. The seafront promenade is fringed by traditional fisherman’s cottages with colourful shuttered windows, and much of the town is pedestrianized, so wear comfortable shoes and explore. Need to refuel? Treat yourself to local specialities like kanougas (soft caramel with chocolate, coffee and nuts). The elegant resort of Biarritz (half an hour’s drive) was once a favourite destination for the aristocracy, but it is now renowned for its surfing action. Relax on the sandy beaches, cross the little bridge to the Rocher de la Vierge stack, or have a go at the slot machines in Casino Barrière Biarritz. The capital of the French Basque country, Bayonne (half an hour) is known for the imposing Cathédrale Sainte-Marie de Bayonne, a UNESCO World Heritage site with brightly painted vaulted ceilings. Stock up on local delicacies at the Carreau des Halles market, or pop into L’Atelier du Chocolat - Musée du Chocolat.
