  • Family site on the Gartempe river, a 10-minute drive from Guéret
  • Wolves of Chabrières 15 minutes’ drive; Jardin LACORE one hour
  • Dogs welcome; wild swimming and fishing; playground; launderette
The peaceful rural surroundings of the Creuse department of central France can be your playground for the holidays when you stay at Camping La Chapelle. This budget site, a 10-minute drive from the market town of Guéret, is enclosed within a lush area of forest and the Gartempe river. In practical terms, this location translates into interesting forays into the woods (whether on foot, with your canine companion by your side, or on your mountain bike) and a range of water-based activities – from wild swimming to fishing for carp. Spacious pitches sit in the shade of leafy trees, giving the impression that you’re camping in a remote spot in the middle of a forest. But fear not: not only is there someone on site at all times to assist with any queries you might have, you also have a number of useful facilities here, starting with a grassy play area with swings, trampolines and climbing structures (and picnic tables from where you can supervise your children’s playground etiquette…) and a pétanque court for family tournaments. In addition to a barbecue area, there’s a snack bar serving simple meals (plus ice cream and waffles) and a food store. For anything else you might need for dinner, Guéret has independent butcher’s shops, greengrocers and bakeries – as well as a decent selection of restaurants, should you decide to treat yourself to some regional specialities (or global dishes). Other on-site amenities include a launderette and a toilet block with facilities for disabled guests.

Local attractions

At the Wolves of Chabrières park (15 minutes’ drive), the animals roam almost freely in enormous forested enclosures. Although wolves make up the vast majority of the park’s residents (with species ranging from northeastern to Eurasian wolves), there are also foxes and deer, plus farmyard animals. The woods around Crocq (one hour), in the Parc naturel régional de Millevaches en Limousin, are dotted with ancient dolmens, such as the Dolmen D’Urbe, a thick slab of rock supported by five stone pillars that some believe was a Druid altar. The Jardin LACORE (one hour) combines a botanical garden with a sculpture park. As you stroll through its many varieties of beech and maple trees, you can check out the colourful animal-inspired mosaic artworks, from a stretching cat to a wild boar. There’s also a yew labyrinth inhabited by a (mosaic) stag and a pond with (real) otters.
