Pitches with lake views

  • Quiet lakeside pitches five minutes’ walk from Podensac in the Gironde
  • Château de Cérons five minutes’ drive; Barsac vineyards 10 minutes
  • Simple off-grid site with fishing, boating and wild swimming available
When it’s simple waterside pitches that you’re looking for, try the 17-hectare privately owned lakeside site sandwiched between the River Garonne and the wine-producing town of Podensac (five minutes’ walk) in the Gironde. Angling is the big sport here, with coarse fishing for carp and koi (catch-and-return only) on tap. If that’s not the pastime for you, try canoeing and kayaking on the calm waters of the lake. You can also go wild swimming, or simply choose to chill while watching stunning sunsets on clear nights. This peaceful site has safe parking by the entrance for campervans and caravans; depending on the weather and the condition of the ground, lighter vehicles can be parked by the lakeside pitches. And just so you know, there are no showers or electricity here. There’s a communal barbecue and covered dining area on the lakeside. Alternatively you can discover some of Gironde’s many gourmet restaurants, or head for vineyards (some at grand châteaux) offering tours, tastings and sales of the Bordeaux wines produced in this region.

Local attractions

You can keep everybody busy fishing or canoeing (there’s boat rental on site) straight from your lakeside pitch, or take your brood quad biking at Pargade Off Road (15 minutes’ drive), where you can all get good and muddy trying out the cross-country course – there’s a learning circuit for novices too. Adventurous types will also enjoy a day on the zipwires and rope courses at Le Lac aux Branches (10 minutes). Combine heritage and fun with a family visit to the Château de Langoiran (15 minutes), where the kids can explore medieval ruins and dress up as 12th-century knights; occasional re-enactments take place in the grounds too. This area is famed for its wines and liqueurs, so take a tour of Maison Lillet distillery (five minutes’ walk), where the fruity, sparkling namesake aperitif is produced. Spread your wings a little further and be guided round the barrel cellars at Château de Cérons (five minutes’ drive), where you can taste and buy the region’s sweet Sauternes dessert wines; the mellow-stone hillside village of Barsac (10 minutes) also has several AOC vineyards to visit.
