Looking for something a little bit different in the Gironde? You’re definitely in the right place at Les Roulottes Vesta, edging the wine town of Léognan and surrounded by Pessac-Léognan vineyards, where stylish accommodation is in hand-crafted and colourful traditional gypsy roulottes.
Each of the genuine wooden roulottes has been decorated with care and cute little design flourishes; sleeping two adults in an alcove bed, they also have a child’s bed (tucked under the double during the day) and room for a travel cot. The ensuites have a large shower, and the kitchen corners are equipped with a hob, fridge and crockery. Thoughtful extras include provision of bathroom linen, a welcome pack with a few basics like tea and coffee, and complimentary toiletries in the bathrooms.
The roulottes are cleverly tucked away within a large and leafy garden for maximum privacy; exclusive-use outdoor space encompasses wooden decking with picnic tables and seating, plus a couple of deckchairs for lounging in the sun.
Should you need any inspiration for sightseeing, your hostess Véronique can advise you on walks and major attractions in the area.

Local attractions
Start your exploration of this pretty corner of Aquitaine with a wander around the forested shores of Lac Bleu (five minutes’ drive), where there’s a small sandy beach for soaking up the sun and a bar for alfresco drinks. And talking of drinks, many of the local Pessac-Léognan (also five minutes) and Bordeaux (20 minutes) wineries are open for tours and tastings.
Pay homage to wine at La Cité du Vin in gorgeous and cultured Bordeaux (half an hour) itself, which also offers up the Gothic splendour of Cathédrale St-André, and the unique Miroir d’Eau water fountain outside the landmark Palais de la Bourse.
If a day on the coast beckons, head for Arcachon Bay (45 minutes), renowned for its extensive system of dunes – in particular the ever-shifting Grande Dune du Pilat – to have a dip in the sea and then make a beeline for one of the local oyster farms to sample their produce. You can also eat seafood in gourmet restaurants overlooking the water, take a yacht cruise around the bay and cycle boardwalks backing the beaches.
