- Eco-friendly wild camping on a farm 15 minutes’ drive from Subachoque
- Cerro El Tablazo 50 minutes’ drive; Salt Cathedral one hour
- Composting toilet; communal fridge and organic food; cycle hire
About 50 kilometres from Bogotá, off the main road linking Subachoque and La Pradera (less than 15 minutes’ drive to either towns), Guecha de la Quebrada is a peaceful family-friendly spot on a small farm with a water stream running through it.
Drive up to your grassy pitch in the shade of tall native trees, then take a moment to admire the páramo vegetation that surrounds you. And perhaps listen out for the calls of the birds that call this lush high-altitude forest home – all being well, you should record plenty of bird sightings during your stay here. Or maybe you’ll prefer to take advantage of the on-site cycle hire and explore the local area – there are plenty of trails in the vicinity.
What else can you expect at Guecha de la Quebrada? Well, this is wild camping, but not without the occasional treat to sweeten the deal. For example, although there is no hot water, there is a water hook-up for tourers, plus 110v electricity and a composting toilet. Also available is a communal fridge where you can store sausages, veggies and other grillable essentials (a barbecue is also supplied).
The farm’s owners are firm believers in ecosystem regeneration – they’ll be happy to show you how they go about it, and during harvest season they will also share their home-grown organic food bounty with you. Recycling points and charging facilities complete the eco-friendly picture.

Local attractions
Tabio (40 minutes’ drive) is known for the hot springs at Termales El Zipa, where you can soak in multiple pools while taking in views of the surrounding vegetation. Nearby, at the Carmen De Los Juncales Ecological Park (35 minutes), there are nature trails and panoramic swings.
Adventurers should make a beeline for Cerro El Tablazo (50 minutes), a craggy hill where you can take part in such diverse activities as trekking, climbing, horseback riding and mountain biking. There is also birdwatching to be done, not to mention stargazing in this area of low light pollution.
On the outskirts of Zipaquirá (one hour), the Salt Cathedral is a spectacular underground church built within the tunnels of a salt mine. The cathedral is part of a large complex that also includes an activity park where you can follow a mining trail, climb a vertical wall or learn more about the local history of salt production.
