  • Luxurious adults-only shepherd’s huts at Llandyfan in Carmarthenshire
  • Bannau Brycheiniog National Park boundary across the road
  • Underfloor heating, welcome hamper and hot tubs; pub 20 minutes’ walk
When you’re looking to escape to a romantic Welsh idyll – and one with spectacular views over Carmarthenshire and Bannau Brycheiniog National Park at that – chances are you’ll fall in love with the luxurious adults-only shepherd’s huts at Bannau in the rural hamlet of Llandyfan. Bijou and perfectly proportioned, they certainly manage to pack a punch in a compact space, each having a well-equipped kitchen, cosy seating and a dining nook as well as an ensuite bathroom with a roomy shower and a king-size bed in the separate sleeping area. Locally produced toiletries, bath robes, all bedding and a welcome pack come as part of the deal, as does Netflix and underfloor heating. Moving outside, each of the handful of huts has a private area with outdoor seating, a firepit/barbecue and a woodfired hot tub, which is the place to be at sunset with a glass of fizz at the ready. Bannau is handily located five minutes’ drive from Ammanford shops and supermarkets if you need to restock, while there’s a pub in the village (20 minutes’ walk) and a local shop that sells homemade preserves, breads, quiches and pre-prepared meals. If you’re thinking of barbecuing, the butcher in the village of Llandybie (10 minutes) comes highly recommended.

Local attractions

You couldn’t get closer to Bannau Brycheiniog National Park without actually being in it. The boundary is across the road from the glampsite, so you can get set for hiking and cycling adventures, or nights of watching stars in dark skies when the conditions are right. Other day-trip options include exploring deep underground at the National Showcaves Centre for Wales (40 minutes’ drive), or taking the Brecon Mountain Railway (an hour) up to Torpantau amid glorious views. There’s a good deal of Welsh heritage to check out too; visit the local castles of Carreg Cennen (15 minutes) and Dryslwyn (20 minutes) to learn their backstory of infighting between the Welsh and English in medieval times. You can also tour the lavish Jacobean mansion at National Trust-owned Newton House, or head for Aberglasney Gardens (both 20 minutes) to see the medieval manor house and restored walled gardens. For more gardening inspiration, have a look in the Norman Foster-designed tropical glasshouse at the National Botanical Gardens of Wales (25 minutes), while wildlife fans can take photos of massive birds of prey in mid-flight at the Red Kite Feeding Station (half an hour).
