  • Small tents-only site opposite Pen-Y-Fan Country Park
  • A 15-minute drive from Sirhowy Valley Walk; 25 minutes to the Big Pit
  • Play field on site; 10 minutes' drive from Blackwood town centre
In the South Wales Valleys, things like castles, country parks, coal mines (and of course, valleys) are never too far off. Among those splendid sloping landscapes is Fferm Gelli Camping, a family-run and Welsh-themed micro campsite fab for families looking for a quiet break. This small site is part of a Welsh farm with horses, chickens, goats and a sheep. The owners live on site and they’re fans of dogs, which is why your four-legged friend is also welcome to come and stay. With a seating area, user-friendly wet room and a children’s play field, families and dog owners should feel right at home. Equipment hire is also available at the site for things like tents, firepits and airbeds. Outside of the site, though, things are just as splendid… a few minutes' walk will get you to the local Pen-Y-Fan Pond, a green space that hosts activities such as trout fishing, canoeing and stand-up paddleboarding. Blackwood town centre is just 10 minutes’ drive away for supermarkets, a cinema, leisure centre, takeaways and a golf course. If you'd also like to try horse riding, there’s an equestrian centre 10 minutes’ drive away. Of course, this location is within reach of many more cool locations, including multiple castles within 25 to 45 minutes’ drive of the site. There are lots of mountain biking trails around too, such as Tirpentwys Mountain Bike Trails 15 minutes’ drive away. Cardiff, the Welsh capital, is 45 minutes’ drive to the south and the Brecon Beacons National Park is 10 miles to the north for all things outdoorsy.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Location, facilities, view, quietness.

Disliked: Next to public footpath/bridleway where whilst in my tent getting off to sleep at 9pm experienced a gang of local kids throwing things at the tent, spitting and shouting out there were "four black men outside my tent coming for me" couldn't get back to sleep and felt insecure being only person there in case they came back so never got any sleep and by 3am started packing up to go home. Obviously this isn't the owners fault but maybe put people in starting at the top and the lower number spaces last so if this happens again there are plenty of people on site.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: I camped here with my twin 9 yr old niece and nephew last weekend. Their first time camping. What a cracking little campsite. Perfect for families with little ones. The owner was lovely. Great facilities. Large toilet shower units. Covered seating area. Cafe. Play field with football goal, giant connect 4, swing ball, hay bales, fire pits. And of course, the animals 😍

Powered grass tent campsite

Liked: NOTHING - please read about our experience and avoid, it is the most expensive site and the smallest pitches with no proper facilities. No idea how they get away with charging so much for that, that is as close to a scam as you can get. And you won't get your money back.

Disliked: We paid £35 for one night (with electricity and a dog). We have been camping for many years (this was our 9th weeekend away just this year) and we have NEVER come across such a bad site:
- tiny pitches, tents were literally cramped next to each other one meter apart
- we've been to family friendly sites before which was never a problem - but within such a close proximity on this site this meant there were way too many people and kids crammed within a tiny space (very noisy as you can imagine)
- no proper facilities - 2 portaloos for 30-40 people! And two cabin / portable showers. Absolutely unbelievable for the price they charge.
- the overflow field is not only on a slope but so uneven, I really wish I took some photos to share as a proof
- it was so bad we decided to rather loose money and find somewhere else for the night than stay and have an awful experience.

I really wish someone had warned us - the owner said there was nothing wrong with the pitch so no refund given (despite the fact we paid extra for electricity which we did not use and the dog that ended up not being there).
It ruined our weekend and left nothing but a bitter taste... I have no idea how this site got any positive reviews at all.

From the manager: Sorry you feel like this but as explained to yourselves, there was enough room for your tent if it was the size that we state fits upon are pitches! (Yours like your wife stated was a larger tent!)

If you read the description about our site you will see we only offer the amount of pitches we can hold, we are a small site which again we stated!

We have more than 2 toilets there are more showers and toilets, you wasn't there long enough to even look around you pulled up seen a pitch you was unhappy with and wanted a refund!

I gave you the option of another field which you declined, stating it was uneven, again you didn't even walk around to look at this field!

We can not please everyone on our site and reviews like this can be detrimental to a company, I was more than helpful in showing you another pitch you just wanted your money back!!

As for there being many people at the site we are also a cafe open to the public, these were not staying on site just day visitors to see our animals and facilities...

Please please read up on a site before booking like I said these reviews can be detrimental to companies, your welcome to your say but please state the facts also.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: I visited this weekend with a 3 year old a 12 year old and a 13 year old. They all had a lovely time. It was lovely to go for a walk to the Penyfan pond across the road and we all loved watching the animals and had a fab time when we could feed and pet them. The coffee in the cafe is delicious too

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked: Clean facilities. Decent pitches / field. Friendly farm animals for the children to pet. Friendly staff. Cafe on site for light meals and drinks. Good location access to Brecon national park and easy access to local towns / shops. Dogs and camp fires permitted.

Disliked: For the price, Can’t complain about anything. Wash up area could perhaps be a big bigger but that’s really nit picking.

Local attractions

A castle visit is a must, but which will it be? Caerphilly Castle (25 minutes’ drive) is a medieval castle, Castell Coch (35 minutes) is from the 19th century and Cardiff Castle (45 minutes) has over 2000 years of history for you to uncover. With the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park around 20 minutes’ drive to the north, mountain hikes are always an option. Otherwise, the Sirhowy Valley Walk (around 15 minutes) is certainly spectacular. The long-distance hike has miles of walking over farms, woodlands and mountain ridges in the Valleys landscapes, beginning or ending in Newport. You may want to learn a little about the history of Welsh mining while you’re around these parts. If so, the Big Pit National Coal Museum (25 minutes) runs tours around a Welsh coal mine. Perhaps a visit to a cider farm too? Hallets Cider (15 minutes) runs cider tasting tours and food pairing sessions.
