  • Well-maintained rural site with pitches surrounded by trees
  • On the edge of Ruabon; Llangollen 15 minutes' drive
  • Easy access from A539; half a mile to pubs and a railway station
Set yourself up for leisurely North Wales breaks at James Caravan Park, a well-maintained site on the edge of the small town of Ruabon. There's a range of styles of pitches here, from grass-based basic options to hard-standing fully-serviced plots, plus a host of handy amenities like a centrally heated toilet and shower block. With easy access off the A539 dual carriageway, the park grounds are spacious and dotted with trees, but please be aware there may be some traffic noise. With so much room on site, your nearest neighbours are likely to be the various forms of local wildlife that flit among the trees (although when you're feeling more sociable, it's an easy half-mile walk to the nearest pub). The park is a 15-minute drive from the gorgeous town of Llangollen, the base of the Clwydian Range and Dee Valley Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Guests with an adventurous side have all sorts of activities to try out here, from river rafting to boating, trail riding and more. Larger towns and cities like Wrexham (10 minutes' drive), Chester (30 minutes) and Liverpool (50 minutes) are also well within reach for urban day trips. The nearest station is under 15 minutes' away on foot, making it easy to catch the train to Chester (journey time 20 minutes) or Shrewsbury (30 minutes) too.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Plenty of space in the pitch. Well signed site. Toilet/showers clean and warm, underfloor heating. Outdoor, undercover washing up area. Water, toilet waste disposal, recycling bins, dog waste bins around the site, good one way system. Alison was lovely. Firepits for hire and wood available.

Disliked: Main roads around the site but not too close, which could be noisy and boy racers driving up and down the road, possibly racing, at 5am wasn't appreciated.

FHU cement/asphalt campsite

Liked: Easy checking in. Clean and warm shower facilities. Excellent location. Very quiet considering the position of the roads!

Disliked: Minor but it was stressed that that we had to be careful with the electricity. We struggled with this while cooking a meal. But other than that no issues.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Toilets and showers are warm and clean. Nothing special but ample. Dish washing facilities look fine too.

Disliked: Site wasn't like description, it is surrounded by main roads and a well lit garage in plain view. It's noisy and isn't like it says on website at all. It's a shame as we were looking forward to a night away somewhere like the website portrays but in reality it was very disappointing. We were cramped next to another camper overlooking a very busy road, nothing like the site promises as feeling like you have the place to yourself, so we left an hour after arriving. We've had quieter and less cramped overnights on pay for car parks. £20 per night no electric in winter is way overpriced for offering.

Primitive grass campsite

Liked: Friendly and welcoming staff. The toilet block was clean and warm.

Disliked: I am noise sensitive so really struggled with the constant noise from the road. However, my partner said he was not bothered by it.

Local attractions

Hoping for history? You've come to the right place. Take a trip to Chirk Castle (10 minutes' drive) and discover one of the most impressive Marcher fortresses on the border between England and Wales. Afterwards, similarly scenic and historic times are to be had at the National Trust-run Erddig Estate (15 minutes), a spectacular Grade I-listed property with fab formal grounds. Water has done such a lot to shape the Welsh landscape, and the area surrounding James Caravan Park has a fair bit of the wet stuff to admire. Check out the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct (10 minutes) on the Shropshire Union Canal to see an exceptional feat of Victorian engineering, and stick around to take a boat ride by its arches along the river Dee. For a break with one foot in Wales and the other in England, trundle along by train to Chester Zoo (or drive there in 30 minutes), take yourself off to Tate Liverpool (50 minutes) for art and culture, or – if you really want to make the kids' day – organise a jaunt to the high-adrenaline rides at Gulliver's World Theme Park (50 minutes).
