  • Well-maintained pop-up site on a working farm in the south of Anglesey
  • Beaumaris Castle and Eryri National Park half an hour’s drive
  • Dogs welcome; views of Eryri mountains; pub a five-minute drive away
Expansive green fields and splendid views of the mountains of Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) – that’s just some of what you get when you stay at Morfa Brenin. This dog-friendly site with level grass pitches sits on a working farm right next to the river Afon Cefni, in the south of the island of Anglesey, a 15-minute drive from Llangefni. The owners are keen to point out that the surrounding fields will be little hives of activity during the summer months, and that guests should expect both the sounds and the smells associated with the countryside. But that’s in the daytime, when (chances are) you’ll be out and about exploring the island. At night, all should be blissfully peaceful – and that’s not only thanks to the site’s remote location, but also because there is a curfew on loud music and noise. The site has a portable toilet and a washing-up area, but it is a wild-camping affair here, and there is neither hot nor drinkable water. Be sure to stock up en route to the site, or by taking a little detour to the villages of Newborough or Bethel (both about 10 minutes’ drive), where there are well-stocked convenience stores. If it’s not water you’re after, but a well-poured pint, the nearest pub is in the village of Malltraeth (five minutes by car or a 40-minute walk along the river), where there is also a fish and chips shop. For more choice (of stores, but also eateries), head into Llangefni.

Local attractions

Llanddwyn and Newborough beaches (20 minutes’ drive), occupying the southernmost area of Anglesey, are popular spots for kite-surfing thanks to the breezes blowing in from the Atlantic Ocean. Backed by vegetation-covered dunes, this vast expanse of sand is also home to rare orchids and assorted birdlife, and you can walk out to atmospheric Ynys Llanddwyn while you're here. Ambitiously planned by Edward I in the 13th century but never completed, moated Beaumaris Castle (half an hour) overlooks the Menai Strait. After your visit, head to the seafront and walk the length of Beaumaris Pier for spectacular views of the mainland. Experienced hikers might want to have a go at Crib Goch or another peak in Eryri National Park (half an hour), which also has mountain-biking trails, ziplining experiences (including Zip World Llechwedd, which flies above the slate mines of Blaenau Ffestiniog) and watersports.
