Unmown pitch

  • Nearly wild campsite for Greener Camping Club members in Gwynedd
  • Beaches five minutes’ drive and Eryri National Park 10 minutes
  • Spacious and off-grid grass pitches; showers in a converted trailer
Newly opened in 2024, Cae Ddel Country Camping is little gem of a Greener Camping Club members-only (nearly) wild campsite in Gwynedd, with spacious grassy pitches tucked into woodland a short walk from a couple of wildlife ponds. This is an off-grid tents-only site with no electric hook-ups or wifi, offering you a total detox from the 21st-century world; take advantage of that to enjoy some quiet downtime with partners, family or friends. However, Cae Ddel deserves its ‘nearly’ wild camping accolade thanks to the hot showers found in the up-cycled trailer, along with three loos and a washing-up area to make your camping adventure as effortless as possible. If you fancy trying a bit of alfresco cooking, there are firepits, barbecues and chimeneas to hand for your use, and covered picnic huts for all-weather dining outside. There’s also plenty to do in the vicinity of the campsite, with Criccieth beaches five minutes’ drive, and the gateway to Eryri National Park (Snowdonia) 10 minutes away by car.

Primitive grass and gravel campervan campsite

Liked: Quiet, cool converted horsebox loos and showers. Lovely little woodland walk. Outside seats covered so you can sit outside when if it's raining. Lovely friendly owner.

Disliked: Satnav takes you past the field, so drive slowly in case you miss it.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Ist time camp with 2 labradors...
My Grandson, my dogs & I loved the woodland walk.
The dogs enjoyed running around off lead chasing each other in the designated enclosed dog field.
As a family who value peace, tranquility & privacy the location was ideal, ideal pitch size.
All the facilities were clean & fresh & we thoroughly appreciate what is on offer here in this hidden gem.
Thank you for an absolutely wonderful stay, we didn't want to leave.

Disliked: There is nothing to dislike here.

Primitive grass and earth tent campsite

Liked: Cae Ddel is a great campsite.

If you want to have a quiet time, enjoy camping and just need the basic facilities it is perfect.

If you need to disconnect from modern life, you'll find the lack of interruptions from the internet an ideal "digital detox". There is no WiFi or mobile internet access here.

The site only opened this year and Frances and her partner have created a little oasis near the village of Rhoslan.

The toilet block and showers are in a well equipped trailer and are kept very clean and tidy.

If you're travelling on foot, there is a bus service between Rhoslan and Criccieth, or you can walk the 4km to the train station.

Each pitch has a wooden hut where four people can comfortably sit, socialise and prepare food.

The nearest shops are in Criccieth, so make sure you bring a few days supply of food and drinks with you.

There is a beautiful woodland walk within the site. There are lots of trees and a couple of ponds that have plenty of birds and wildlife.

I really enjoyed my stay at Cae Ddel and I wish the owners all the best for the future.

Matt

Local attractions

There’s a fair choice of outdoorsy and cultural options in this corner of North Wales; you can soon be lounging on the beach, learning a new watersport or trying your hand at multigolf in Criccieth (five minutes’ drive), while the hiking, climbing and cycling opportunities of Eryri National Park (10 minutes) could keep you busy for days. If you’re travelling with kids, wear them out on the inflatable floating climbing courses at Glasfryn Parc (15 minutes), or introduce them to the joys of steam-train travel with a ride through scenic Gwynedd countryside on the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway from Porthmadog (also 15 minutes). Sneak a little heritage into the holiday mix with a day out at the Italianate folly that is Portmeirion (20 minutes), where you can admire madcap colourful architecture or put your feet up in the spa. Tour the ramparts of Caernarfon Castle (25 minutes) for dramatic views over the River Seiont, or head for Harlech Castle (half an hour) to see jousting tournaments and take the informative self-guided tour of its towers and courtyards.
