  • Small hilltop glamping site with views over the Clwydian Range
  • At the base of Penycloddiau; Offa's Dyke Path within walking distance
  • Eco-friendly energy sources used; firepits and barbecues welcome
Hatching a plan for a holiday in North Wales? At Logfire Holidays, you’ll be in for firepits over starry skies (a telescope is available to borrow on request), hiking in the footsteps of an old king and picking between beaches, mountains and the countryside. With a hilltop position and views over the Clwydian Range, fabulous scenery is a given and when conditions are cloud-free, the dark skies make for splendid stargazing (over a firepit or a barbecue, perhaps?). This glamping site has a host that cares. Hence, the site has a full set of eco-friendly credentials: low-carbon air source heat pumps, solar-powered electricity and an electric vehicle charger for guests who need it. The goal is to minimise power and water consumption, so they encourage quiet, back to basic breaks. That’ll be quite easy indeed, given the peaceful rural atmosphere. Eves might be spent around the firepit or barbecue, doing plenty of stargazing of course, and days might involve hiking or cycling in the surrounding landscapes. At the base of Penycloddiau (it takes 45 minutes or so to hike to the top) and within walking distance of the Offa’s Dyke Path, there are a fair few choices for hikes. There are free-range hens roaming around the site’s field and orchard. Facilities-wise, there’s a shower and toilet in the nearby building and a small honesty shop for basics; food packages can also be organised if you request them in advance. Caerwys, a 45-minute walk or a five-minute drive away, also has a pub, café, shop and a pizza takeaway.

Local attractions

Beach, please? You won’t have far to go at all. Talacre beach (25 minutes’ drive) has a peaceful seafront, and on a stroll down to the Dee estuary, you might be lucky enough to spot birds like skylarks or warblers. Prestatyn beach (25 minutes) has a livelier scene; get stuck into surfing or sailing there. With Snowdonia National Park accessible from 35 minutes’ drive, you’re in store for mountain scenery, steam railways and adrenaline-inducing activities. Just block in some time to visit Snowdon Mountain Railway (an hour and five minutes) and Adventure Parc Snowdonia (50 minutes). You may not be on a city break, but a city day trip is well within your reach since Chester (40 minutes) and Liverpool (an hour and 10 minutes) are within driving distance. As for those of you who’d like to see some remnants of times gone by, the National Trust’s Bodnant Garden (40 minutes) is a Grade I-listed building and Gwrych Castle (half an hour) is a 19th-century house. Rhuddlan (20 minutes) is a castle that has been standing since the 1200s. And for a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Conwy (35 minutes) has a 13th-century fortress and ancient walls.

Emily Rose shepherd's hut

Liked: Beautiful location, beautifully appointed shepherd's hut and excellent value. Really liked the intention of the hosts to make the site as sustainable and eco-friendly as possible, and appreciated their friendliness. Also appreciated having good walks from the door. Loved having the company of the hens at breakfast - and relaxing on the swing and in the hammock.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and for the note you left in the hut - my work trip was very rewarding thank you. We really appreciate the care you took of the shepherd's hut during your stay and your comments relating to the eco / sustainability elements of the site here which we will constantly be working to improve. Delighted that you found the relaxation you were looking for.

Emily Rose shepherd's hut

Liked: We recently had the pleasure of staying in this lovely Shepherd's hut nestled in the heart of some of the most stunning scenery we have ever seen. As soon as we arrived, we received a warm welcome from Nicola, who gave us a tour of the property and even brought us some fresh milk to go with the lovely welcome pack already left in the hut. Nicola was always just a text away and did everything she could to help out, even offering to post my girlfriend's earrings she had forgotten after we left.

The Shepherd's hut itself was beautifully decorated and had everything you could possibly need for a relaxing stay. From the comfortable bed to the cozy log burner, every detail had been thought of to make us feel right at home.

A highlight of our stay was the lovely walks in the area, which allowed us to take in the spectacular views and get out and about in the sun.

Nicola was also incredibly helpful in providing recommendations for local attractions, activities, and pubs, which helped us make the most of our stay.

We would highly recommend this Shepherd's hut to anyone looking for a unique and relaxing experience.

Disliked: Nothing.
