  • Cosy ensuite shepherd's huts at a 20-acre Denbighshire smallholding
  • Ruthin 15 minutes' drive; half an hour to Llangollen or Lake Bala
  • Meet the animals on site, including peacocks, alpacas and goats
Roaming about in the gorgeous Welsh hills by day, cosying up in a lovely little hut by night – doesn’t that just sound like a fabulous plan for a rural break? It’s exactly this sort of schedule that tempts people to Hafoty Boeth, in the Denbighshire hamlet of Brynsaithmarchog, about 10 minutes’ drive from Corwen. It’s only half a mile from the A494 (a handy road for getting out to explore the area), but this is a supremely peaceful spot with gorgeous views all around, and plenty of little lanes to wander through nearby. The owners of this 20-acre smallholding have been living here for more than 40 years, and over that time they’ve gathered quite the menagerie, including alpacas, llamas, sheep, goats, geese… and a pet squirrel called Hazel. Guests are encouraged to meet the animals while they’re here – and will definitely get to know the peacocks that roam freely around the place too. Accommodation here is in comfortable and well-equipped shepherd’s huts, each of which has both underfloor heating and a separate heater to make sure you’ll be warm and cosy at all times. The self-contained huts have their own kitchen (with fridge, cooker, microwave and all the crockery and utensils you’ll need) and an ensuite shower room, along with a sitting area and TV. Outside, a barbecue is provided so you can cook while soaking up all that splendid scenery.

Local attractions

Once you’ve warmed up on the local lanes, perhaps you’d like a longer walk? If so, you could walk the woodland trails in Clocaenog Forest (20 minutes’ drive), head to the hills of the Clwydian Range & Dee Valley National Landscape (20 minutes) or venture into the mountainous landscapes of Eryri (Snowdonia) National Park (half an hour). If you do head into Eryri, you may like to look beyond walking to some more adventurous activities – perhaps rafting at The National White Water Centre (half an hour) or ziplining and riding the forest coaster at Zip World Betws-y-Coed (40 minutes). For a more gentle outing, perhaps try canoeing or paddleboarding at Lake Bala (half an hour). For a bit of town time, Llangollen (half an hour) is a lovely choice – the town itself has lots of nice shops and cafés, and there are good walks to Horseshoe Falls and Castell Dinas Brân, or heritage rides on the Llangollen Railway. Medieval Ruthin (15 minutes) is another good choice, as is the city of Chester (55 minutes), home to all sorts of historic attractions as well as the famous zoo.
