Glasbury river a stones throw away from the campsite

  • Family-friendly Powys campsite on the banks of the River Wye
  • Hay-on Wye and Offa’s Dyke Path 10 minutes’ drive; Hereford 40 minutes
  • Kayak and canoe hire at the adjacent activity centre; café on site
Looking for an action-packed outdoor break with lots of high-octane watery fun to be had? A stay at River Wye Campsite puts you right on the banks of the river at Glasbury-on-Wye. Once there, you can hire canoes or kayaks to paddle downstream, go gorge walking along the Wye, or join in archery and axe-throwing sessions (at an extra cost) at the adjacent activity centre. No problem if your tastes lean more towards culture rather than sporting action, as the campsite is 10 minutes’ drive from Hay-on Wye, making it a clever base for visiting the famed ‘book town’ – especially during the the annual Hay Festival of Literature and Arts, held in late May and early June. Handy on-site facilities include a shower block with plenty of hot water (great for easing tired muscles after a day kayaking on the Wye), a washing-up area and plenty of parking space, either in the car park or next to your tent. Keen to upgrade your alfresco cooking skills? You’re welcome to use free-standing barbecues but please ensure they are raised off the grass to prevent any damage. Packs of kindling can be bought on site, and there’s a covered seating area for communal picnics. If you’d rather someone else took care of the catering, pick up soft drinks, ice cream and tempting cakes in the Paddlers Rest Café – you can order full English breakfasts in there too. On weekends throughout the summer months, the site has regular pop-up trucks with street food and regular live music. Well-behaved dogs are welcome to join in the fun, and there are woodland walks direct from the pitches to keep them exercised too. The owners ask that they are kept on leads while on site, please.

Primitive grass and earth tent or campervan campsite

Liked: Close by pub was good as too was the river close by.

Disliked: Felt like you were camping on a piece of waste ground next to a scout hut, a busy road and the back of people’s houses.
Facilities were no where near enough for the amount of people (a single toilet block with 3 toilets and bizarrely 2 communal showers). No chemical toilet disposal point.
Loud noise from other campers with generator and drinking late into the night.
Smell of weed wafting across the site.
Back field had not been mowed for some considerable time and very uneven.
Limited amount of walks nearby.
We booked for 3 days, but packed up the first morning and went elsewhere.
Photos uploaded to pitchup by the manager are very misleading.

From the manager: I'm sorry you didn't find the campsite to your satisfaction. Out of the 8 acre site we took pains to ask campers not to camp on the recently landscaped and grassed area as we have just had a number of trees down in the winter. The 2 main fields at the front of the property comprise more than half the space and had plenty of space and the 1st picture uploaded is an area that is not used for camping as this is not flat and people walk this way to the wall and river so is misleading.

There were 3 toilet blocks available 2 to the Left and 1 block to the Right of the cafe, and I apologise if you were not shown these.

We do not tolerate any drugs on site, this is a family run family friendly campsite and we will ensure this remains so. There is an on duty manager available in and around the cafe until 11pm most nights and noise complaints must be reported. There then is an onsite manager throughout the night and it is a shame that this was not reported so we couldn't do anything about this.

Happy for you to contact us direct so we can offer you to come and camp again and experience the site as it is meant to be.

Really friendly staff, laid back atmosphere and a great set up

Primitive grass and earth tent or campervan campsite

Liked: Close to river for walks

Disliked: Another visitor played loud blasting music on the radio until 10pm. I know that's down to the inconsiderate visitors but maybe a rule or reminder should be in place.

Liked: Enjoyed absolutely everything about this campsite, we had been travelling around wales for a month and this was by far the best campsite, with an extremely friendly manager, who advised us on some lovely places to go and things to do, it was extremely clean and everything was well maintained.
